Mac desktop image wont change

I have an Intel iMAc and cannot change the desktop image. If I create another user account that works fine but my account has stopped allowing me to do this which is annoying more than anything else. I have read every forum going and all the Apple support but despite trashing various plists etc I cannot find the fault or get it to behave. Any assistance greatly appreciated

    Hi there
I can go to preferences and click on an image and that image will show in the preview screen but it will not change the desktop image. The menu bar at the top of the screen is set to translucent and I can see the tiniest bit of the image I click on appearing thee but the actual desktop image remains as one of the abstract ones that is getting right on my nerves now! Its like this picture overwrites anything that is sitting underneath it. Bizarre and I have trashed everything I can think of and removed all login progs and even restored my system via time machine but will this image go ..........!!! No! Any thoughts gratefully received

On the main drive there is a folder called "Library" in that folder should be another folder called "Desktop Pictures" I suggest checking that folder to make sure the images are present. Also try checking permissions using "Disk Utility" located in "Applications" --->"Utilities Folder" select the main disk in the list on the left and select repair permissions. As a last ditch effort you can reinstall the base system and then restore to time machine as time machine will not restore system components

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

On my imac the admin account shows safari fine, however when I add new user accounts, safari is not available. it shows a grey question mark. when I click on it it vanishes. how do I get safari...

Thanks for the clarification.

The best advice I can give is to either reinstall Safari for that user or install a seperate browser such as firefox for this account. The odd thing is that it isnt in the applications folder, because that would imply it doesnt exist, but as you say it works for the administrator?

Try logging on as the user, installing safari or an alternative browser and adding it to the dock for ease of access and let me know how you get on with that. If it doesnt work, I will think of another way to sort your issue :D

Isight intermittent. G5 Imac 17" The Isight cam I have now dubbed 10sec cam turns off and has to be restarted.

I understand from your problem statement that the internal iSight camera in your G5 iMac turns itself off around 10 seconds after you turn it on.
Create a new temporary user in System Preferences / Accounts. Log out and then log in as this user. Enable the camera. Does it still turn off in 10 seconds? If not, something running in your other user account (a startup program or system preference) is interfering with the operation of your camera.
If you have a spare external drive, install a fresh version of the Mac OS on that drive, then boot from that drive. Does the camera still turn off in 10 seconds? If not, you should run an OS installation with "archive and install" on your internal drive. If it does, you have a hardware problem that requires a Mac tech. If this is indeed a G5 iMac, the repair will likely not be cost-effective.

Master password is lost on mac mini

You should read the Apple Support article on changing/creating a password for the admin account. From there you can control the other accounts. BTW a common mistake is to have the Caps Lock key on. -Ken

Firefox on the Mac

Even though the download says "allows all users" your wife's user account is completely separate from yours. You will have to download Firefox in your wife's account.
