Picture on 15 year old Trintron comes on briefly then goes black

Picture on our ~ 15 year old Sony Trinitron sometimes comes on briefly then goes black. Sometimes the sound stays on sometimes not. Is the tube toast? I have been trying to ''go Green'' and turn off the power to the TV at night--would this hasten the demise of the picture tube?

If the sound goes out its not a tube problem . a bad tube would have no effect on the sound .you problem (my guess) is in the power supply . a modern tv power supply has parts of it that stay on all the time unpluging it is not the problem its when you plug it in ! the power supply gets a JOLT . you might get away with it ,you might not . thats why we install surge arrestors on power plugs and with expensive tvs i recomend a UPS a power unit that keeps the tv powered even wnen the line power is out . thats keeps everthing in the sets nice and even ,so the tv lasts longer ... a modern tv turned off uses about 1.40 in electric a YEAR in standby mode , so what are you saveing if you send you set to the landfill early and have to buy a new one ? over 1.40 in electric ? . turn down you water heater or something else simple dont be blowing out you electronics for the sake of a few cents ..... good luck .... if this answer helped please rate a 3 or 4 , this high rateing will hepl keep me in the paid answer department . thank you

Picture blinks

i have a sony trintron at home from my observation if you set to much of brightness the tv will start blinking.
the other prevention is that you need to take the tv for service so that semiconductor can be changed, zener diodes and electrolitic capacitor before the tv goes completely fault, like that it be comes cheap and first on the tech to change components.
as time goes these components changes conditions so they need changes from time to time
okay

Sony Trinitron TV now taking around 5 minutes for picture to appear (sound comes on instantly) Is it worth repair or should I cut losses and replace set?

How old is the TV?
Sony Trinitron sounds like it may be from the 1980's?
Some TV engineers can use a piece of equipment to do a "tube boost" but this is sometimes risky and can completely ruin the tube, but it's a risk you would have to take.
If the TV is over 15 years old, and has been used regularly, (like 4 hours every day or more) it seems likely that the tube has reached the end of life.
TV cathode ray tubes are like light bulbs...they do not last forever!

Comes on and later goes blank

How much later? The Sony sets have a setting in the menu that turnes the TV off if there isnt' any input, Sometimes this feature gets messed up, and the feature has to be turned off, Check that out and see if that takes care of the problem.

Tired with this sony tv

Sony doesn't want anyone to see a poor picture on a Sony tv so they have a circuit that blanks the video if there is a weak picture or any other problem concerning picture quality. My Sony factory Instructor told me this many many years ago. I'm feeling old...but anyway you need a technician. Sorry.

Sony Trinitron experiences

The screen control inside the set may be on the highvoltage transformer or on the crt socket; either way if you can turn it up just a little clockwise and the picture comes up but doesn't look good you are likely to have a bad tube. Or try tapping lightly on the glass neck and watch the picture as you tap. If it reacts to the tap you have a bad tube. but the turning the screen control is the best test. Turn it the other way the picture goes off immediately. bad tube: too costly if it is available.

Sony kv35s66: No picture, just sound and red blinking

The most common problem (I have fixed lots) is the Vertical amplifier has developed a loose connection. It probably just needs resoldering. As things expand it makes and looses connection you picture goes in and out. The vertical chip is a large black chip that gets hot, over time it degrades the solder until a connection is damaged. Most newer sets have a protection circuit that senses the lack of height, and shuts down the picture tube to save it. When the picture dropped to a line on older TVs and left that way too long it would burn a line into the face of the picture tube. You then had to have the picture tube replaced along with the vertical amp. it's kinda like a screensaver for your TV.
