I can't get my computer usb to recognize my Canon Pixma MX300 printer

I have the latest software, I had the printer cables in correctly but not connected to computer or turned on. I loaded the software, when the software asked me to connect the cable to the computer, and then turn it on, it did not proceed from that point. I have deleted and reinstalled software and drivers and it hasn't changed a thing.

    Operating system is Windows XP

Thanks, I will try this tomorrow, and let you know if this works.

The last suggestion you gave did not work.

I did as you asked, but a window comes up and asks me to pick a printer port. All it shows is LTP1,2&3 and Com 1,2,3 etc. It shows no USB ports to pick from.

I tried to add a USB Port and the drivers installed, and the computer tries to send printing job but it says it can't locate printer.

I probably didn't really add a USB Printer Port. It just asks me to name it I don't know if it is connecting to any of my USB connections.

    Do you have any ideas?

What operating system are you using on the connected computer?

This problem may require you to uninstall the drivers once again. Restart the computer with the printer disconnected. After boot up is complete, plug in the usb printer cable and turn on the printer. Make sure cartridges and paper are loaded properly.

Have the CD that came with the printer in the drive, but don't let it run the Auto install feature. We will use it later should XP not be able to load its own driver for the Canon printer.

Should XP detect the printer, it will attempt to load its own default driver. Watch for the bubble messages at the bottom right of the screen. At some point it may not get the proper driver installed. You then have the option to select "Have driver from disk..." Point Windows XP to the driver disk that came with the printer. Opening the disk contents should show a folder somewhere with XP as a label. Browse to it and have XP install the driver software located in it.

You should now have a functioning printer.

Good luck and let me know if this works for you.

At this point I would have to assume that your computer is not detecting the usb, since it is asking for a printer port selection.

I am a little puzzled why your printer is not automatically detected by XP?

Here are a couple of additional things to try from Canon's online-Manual located at:

Unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen.

If you were unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen, follow the procedure below to reinstall the MP Drivers.

    (1) Click Cancel on the Printer Connection screen.

    (2) Click Start Over on the Installation Failure screen.

    (3) Click Back on the screen that appears next.

    (4) Click Exit on the PIXMA XXX screen (where "XXX" is your machine's name), then remove the CD-ROM.

    (5) Turn the machine off.

    (6) Restart your computer.

    (7) Make sure you have no application software running, including anti-virus software.

    (8) Follow the procedure described in your setup sheet to reinstall the MP Drivers.

Installation does not start automatically when the Setup CD-ROM is inserted into your computer's disc drive.

    (1) Click Start then Computer.

In Windows XP, Click Start then My Computer.

In Windows 2000, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

    (2) Double-click the CD-ROM icon on the displayed window.

To use the Run command to start the setup program, specify your disc drive and then the name of the setup program, MSETUP4.EXE. The drive letter of the disc drive depends on your computer.

Double-click the CD-ROM icon on your desktop to start installation.

If the CD-ROM icon is not displayed, restart your computer.

If the CD-ROM icon is still not displayed, try different disks and see if they are displayed. If other disks are displayed, there is a problem with the Setup CD-ROM. Contact your Canon service representative.

    Installation procedure not followed correctly.

Follow the procedure described in your setup sheet for proper installation.

If the MP Drivers were not installed correctly, uninstall the MP Drivers, restart your computer, and then reinstall the MP Drivers. Refer to the PC Printing Guide on-screen manual.

If the installer was forced to be terminated due to a Windows error, the system may be in an unstable condition and you may not be able to install the MP Drivers. Restart your computer before reinstalling.

I would suggest going to the support section at and download the latest software from their website. Make sure the cable is connected securely on both ends, and restart the computer.
