My computer restarts recognaizing WD external hard drive!

At the start, when I plug wd and work on it, everything is fine. But if I leave the wd plugged but not active (wd plugged but I'm not working on it) for some time then comes back to it, the computer starts to recognaize it again as a new plugged hard drive !!

For example:
This is making me crazy when I'm watching a movie saved in wd, when I pause the movie and after some time get back to it a click play, the media program closes and the computer starts to recognaize the HD as a new one.

what can I do?

I suggest you check the power management on the device. You can right-click the disk in the Device Manager and see if it is allowed to be powered off, or you can check the power settings in the control panel.

Most likely it is turned off, and when it resumes, the computer somehow thinks it was not plugged before.

My WD external hard drive has suddenly stopped being recognised by my computer

Unplug the power supply from the hard drive, leave for 15 seconds.

Plug power supply back in.

Try another USB cable if that does not work.

Hi. My computer says I ejected my WD My Passport external drive but it was not properly ejected. How can I fix this. I need all my thesis files but computer can read the external drive! Help please!

Try to test your WD Ext HDD to a different computer and check if you will get the same problem.

If the same problem persist try to use a different cable for your WD Ext HDD.

If still fails kindly ask the store where you bought the WD Ext HDD on how to retrieve your files and have WD EXT HDD replaced?

If your WD Ext HDD works to a different computer then update the BIOS and Chipset of the computer where your WD Ext HDD connected previously.

Hope this helps.

My wd comes on but my comp is not recognizing it

Try plugging it to another usb port on your computer and make sure the cable is not loosening up. Also, try using a different cable or restart your computer and replug the usb cable and turn on the WD from there. If it still does not work, try to open the casing and remove the two cables connecting to the hard disk inside. Wait for like a minute and connect them back. Put everything back and try again. It it still fails to be detected, then I hope your WD is still under warranty so that you can have it repaired at no cost.

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

I have a WD 500GB External Hard Drive. It has

That could even be a USB problem, I have the same one, my issue turn out to be just power. You are not the first one to have that problem. Replace the USB cord and see if that affects anything.

Pc does not see wd ex.drive when it is plugged into usb skt.

First change the USB socket choose another one, restart your computer while your WD is plugged in. Be sure that you did not put all Mac files on WD , PC cannot see it but reverse is true. Finally change your cable and use a very short one. Hope that you will solve this problem

I have a WD external hard drive USB 2.0 750 GB. It was working just fine for many months, and suddenly, my laptop won't "read" it -- it's not listed/detected in "my computer." I thought there was something...

If the device is recognized and not listed as a driver in the Explorer, then the disk is not recognized as having been partitioned and formatted. You can use the Disk Manager to see if there is anything listed on the disk.
Start - > right-click My Computer -> Properties
In the management console, go to disk management and check your disks. The external disk should be there and then you can see the partitions and drives assigned to it.
If there is nothing on it, your MBR could be damaged, which needs to be restored.

Alternatively you could partition and format it, but then you'd loose the data on it, so that is a last resort.

I think a program called Acronis Disk Director Suite can restore MBR's. Have a look at this external hard disk troubleshooting article.
