Question about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ2 Digital Camera

3 Answers

No image on the display, no image captured when photo taken.

The camera worked perfectly until last week, when the camera would not show an image on the screen. When I took a 'photo', no image was captured. The photos that had already been captured in the camera could be brought up, it is just the taking of new photos.I had changed the battery with no change. I tried to troubleshoot but had no success. I reviewed the settings, but found no problem there. Any ideas?

"Comment by TerryB, posted on Oct 13, 2007 - Thanks!"

After calling the Service Center and explaining this problem, they said it sounded like an internal shutter problem and would have to be sent to them and approx $160.00, I was thinking it might be better to buy a new one.

Then I tried TerryB solution and it WORKED!

Thankyou so much, we'll be able to get photo's of the kids opening Christmas gifts this year.

PS very disappointed in the Service Center phone number - seems like they were going to try to rip me off!

Re: no image on the display, no image captured when photo...

I had the same problem and I just fixed it myself!

I: (1) removed the six screws from the camera; (2) opened it up; (3) simply jiggled the orange ribbon cable; (4) made sure the internal plug-in was in tight; and (5) closed the camera and put the screws back in.  As soon as I turned it on, IT WORKED!!!

Good luck!!

P.S.  I found this solution somewhere on this site, but I can't relocate it.  THANK YOU to whomever posted it!!

BTW, I originally took the camera to the camera store and they told me they would have to send it away for repair, and that I was looking at anywhere between $100-150 to fix.

I took it into a repair shop for an evaluation. They stated that it wasn't a setting problem, but a hardware problem. It would cost a minimum of $135 & about 2 months to repair. I chose to toss it & buy a new camera for about $226.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, particularly for the SD1000. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

By the way, my wife's SD1000 also has this problem every once in a while. I easily fix it by using the following steps from the link: powering on the camera, opening and closing the battery door, and flicking the end of the lens barrel with my fingertip (or you can tap it with a pencil as discussed in the link).

You don't. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. Only more recent dSLRs (Nikon started with the D3 and D300) have the LiveView capability that lets you handle your dSLR as a point&shoot.

Most DSLR cameras (like your Canon) don't have a live view - in other words, you can't "see" the image before you capture it. You must use the viewfinder.
