Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I havea Kenmore Series 70 Washer. I top agitator auger will not spin and suspect the dogs must be replaced. Question is how do you get the top agitator auger and cam driven separated from the bottom agitator?

Thanks, yes I've already gotten the whole agitator assembly out of the washer. But how does the cam driven come apart from the top agitator auger? Or how does the the top agitiator auger come apart from the bottom agitator? It looks like there are two interlock connectors down where the screw is that secure the cam driven in place. But it looks like they could be easily broken off I'm not careful. How do you release those connectors?

  • rayman664 Apr 19, 2009

Thanks again. Well now that I have the two agitator sections apart I can see that the two tab connector posts are part of the bottom agitator. Actually the tab on one of the connector posts broke off in separating the agitator sections. That is exactly what I DID NOT want to happen! Alas, I cannot see any other way either to release the tabs without risking breaking off the tab or the entire post. However, since the other tab connector is intact and most of the post of the other is there, I assume that the cam will still be held securely in place once it is all screwed back down.

    I appreciate the advice.

Take the softner dispensor out then you have a clear cap, remove that it just comes right out.
Then you will see a 7/16" screw take that out. Then the top will easily come out.

Very easy can do it in like 2 mins.

The hard part is lineing it all up to put it back in. Let me know if you need any more help.

Place agitator on floor. put your feet on both sides of agitator. grab top portion and give a quick tug, you will not break it.

Kenmore 70 series mod 110.24722300 the top part opf the agitator seems really wobbly, when spinning. is ther a bearing out or what? thanks

Does it agitate properly when in washing cycle? If it agitates "sloppily" there is a little kit you can buy to replace the agitator parts that get worn out. (they are called "dogs"). It doesn't cost much and is fairly easy to do.

The agitator my also just be loose. You can pry off the cap and tighten it up, but I suspect the dogs are worn.

Top agitator, not being spun by motor

If the problem is just the the agitator not working, but everything else does, you may just have a worn agitator cam assembly, worn agitator dogs, loose agitator bolt, or all of the above. The following link explains what agitator dogs are and how to access them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

Whirlpool manufactured washers use a split agitator design. The top half is known as the "auger, while the lower half is the agitator. Between the two pieces is a cam assembly, with small teflon teeth known as "dogs". There's also an agitator bolt that holds the entire assembly to the center post.

If the auger (top half of the agitator) is slipping, I would suspect the dogs or cam assembly need to be replaced. The part number for the dogs is included in the link I provided. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam assembly which includes the dogs, the cam, the cam seal and thrust bearing.

If the entire agitator appears loose or slipping, check the agitator bolt to ensure it is tight. DO NOT overtighten as this can restrict movement of the agitator or damage it. Tighten until snug.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers from the Sears website and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. Most of these parts are commonly sold as part of their in-store inventory.

Read through the information provided and let me know if you have any questions. Please include a complete MODEL NUMBER with any questions you may have. I hope this is helpful to you.

Kenmore Dryer 70 series washer agitator sounds like its skipping

Remove the center cap, or fabric softener dispenser (if installed) from the agitator center post. There should be another cap (used as an air gap) under the center post cap. Remove the cap and locate the agitator bolt. Using a socket and ratchet, hold the agitator still with one hand and loosen with other. The upper portion (called the auger) should lift off, first. Then, grasp the agitator by the flanges at the bottom of the wash tub and lift straight up. This will reveal the gearcase (transmission) shaft.

Now...is the entire agitator slipping? Or, is it just the auger? If the auger is slipping, you may just need to replace the agitator dogs. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r823955-replacing_agitator_dogs

Read through the link provided and let me know if you still need assistance. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: If the dogs are worn and need replaced, you only need to remove the auger and not the entire agitator.

Washer does spin but barely agitates

It sounds like the agitator dogs are worn.
To remove the agitator, pry off the agitator cap and remove the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out pull up on the top section of the agitator (auger) to remove it. Underneath the auger you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). . Replace those and it should be ok.

The part number is 80040

Good luck!

I have a Kenmore Series 80 washer that agitates a little but is very weak. Spins Ok. Clothes don't clean very well. I need help.

Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way).If you're able to turn it in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced. To do this remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.
