I will be going out to pull it apart to see if that is what it is. I also have a problem that when it kicks back, its breaks the bolt loose that connects the generator to the motor--what can I do about it? Think locktight would help?

    Thanks for all your help!

A lockwasher would be the best thing but, yes locktight would work also.

I have a Tecumseh 8hp snowblower engine that kicks back and has broken the plastic handle. I soaked the carb ( engine surging) cleaned it all real good. I checked the woodrift key, no marks , fly wheel...

If you didn't replace the woodruff key, you need to anyways. Another option is the cam. Have you had your coil it and may have possibly on upside down? It is definitely your timing, it is just a process of elimination.

Need diagram of throttle and governor for tecumseh 143.986001 motor

A google search for Tecumseh motor parts breakdown will give you several options. Your ID for the motor is not correct. Look for stamped numbers in the main metal housing. It should start off with two or three letters...LV, OHV....three numbers, and maybe..two letters.

When i pull the cord on my lawnmower it kicks back and pulls the cord out of my hand

sounds like the SHEAR pin is broken, replace shear pin, this can cause the timing on the motor to be off. it is designed to protect the motor from hitting a stump, a rock, etc.

1996 chevy c1500 5.7. i replaced the lower intake gasket. now with it all put back together it wont start. i took the distributor out and set the motor to TDC and set the distributor to the #1 cylinder....

You need to pull the distributor back out, put motor to TDC
now you say its always a tooth off...the timing chain may be alittle when you are trying to put the distribor back in ...put a socket or something... to move the crankshaft.....move it back and forth untill the distributor falls in....AT the number one plug on cap....
Hope this helps you out ??

I have a Toro electric start 22'' inch lawmnower Model No. 20018 with a Tecumseh LEV 90-120 engine. The mower may be started with the electric start or manually with the cord. The battery was in need of...

It sounds like the starter drive may be jammed. It should not be engaged unless you are using the starter motor. Take the spark plug wire off, put on heavy leather gloves, and try turning the blade by hand to dislodge the starter drive. If it does dislodge, plug the spark plug wire back up and try the pull start again.

Bolt comes loose and rip cord is yanked from hand

  1. block off the blade and driver assembly with a 2x4 to keep it from moving
  2. remove the flywheel nut (regular hand force should be sufficient)
  3. tap the 3 holes on the flywheel (if they aren't already threaded) using 1/4inch 20national tap set
  4. remove the flywheel using a flywheel puller -- a harmonic balancer puller which matches the tecumseh bolt pattern on the flywheel also works using 3 1/4inch thread (20national, 2inch long) bolts with washers
  5. NOTE: (if the blade was removed/reinstalled, tighten the blade to manufacturer's spec of 60lbs) before installing the new flywheel key
  6. remove the sheared flywheel key
  7. clean up the flywheel (wipe off all the dirt and grease)
  8. install the new flywheel key (part 611004 for toro 20016)
  9. install the flywheel (pull the bail brake handle to get the ball-brake inside the flywheel)
  10. tighten the flywheel nut to manufacturer's spec of 37.5lbs
  11. prime the gas bulb, give it a pull and mow away
