You could have a defective screen - follow this to determine the fault.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

You entered in the cycle of internal/external monitor. Ok, laptops have three display modes:
1) Internal
2) External
3) Internal AND external simultaneously.
You can change modes by pressing Fn+F4 keys (you model may vary). Press the key combination, and wait 1-2 seconds, keep pressing the key combination until you reach you internal display mode.

Is the AC Power adapter the original adapter of the laptop? If it is, try to drain the battery and charge it for 8-12 hours without using or opening the laptop just charge it. After charging, remove the power adapter as you open your laptop. Make this way a habbit of using and charging your laptop to make the charging and battery life last long.

It powers is good. No disk activity e.g read ,when boot up. no display activity.

boot problems

A200 series laptops are very good normally but don't boot up if there is a device in the USB slot or a CD/DVD in the drive.
If it still refuses to POST, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and remove the hard drive.
Power the unit up without the hard drive and it should complete POST and complain that there is no hard drive. If that doesn't work remove AC adapter, ensure battery is disconnected and remove hard drive and RAM. Try again. If it still doesn't work, you have a mother board fault and it needs a service centre. www.Toshiba.com will help you out.
If it does work at one of the options, when you have closed the laptop down, replace the RAM first and test, then the Hard Drive.

When working download updated BIOS from Toshiba.com
Hope this fixes your problem.

Laptop Toshiba Satellite A200 Model No. PSAF6A-02C01N fail boot

Try removing / swapping / reseating the memory.

Try booting with one stick only, if the top slot doesn't work, try booting the bottom slot. Try both sticks.

Let me know what happens.

Toshiba Satellite A200 unstable on power

The problem is probably not in the motherboard itself, but may be internal to the laptop.
From what you've described the problem is either in the AC Adapter itself or in the power supply inside the laptop (the area where you plug the AC adapter into the computer.
The first thing to try is another AC adapter if you can get a hold of one or purchase one if need be as it's the most likely source of the problem. More than likely it's providing enough power for the system to recognize it's attached and draw power from it, but there is likely a short inside it or the cords keep the power from being constant.
If you do not have a full adapter to test with, you can replace the end that plugs into the wall with and universal plug - something you can buy at major retail stores. The adapters take a lot of wear and tear and can be damaged from all the stuff we put them through.

My toshiba A200 screen occasionally turns black and music also stops. When i try manually restarting my laptop, sometimes it works but most of the time it doesnt boot at all. Sometimes it doesnt even go...

This sounds like a hard drive is, or has failed. Either that or the RAM (memory has gone bad)
Did you let the laptop overheat? Was it left on for a long time? Or is this just an old machine ?
I would replace the hard drive, and reload the operating system, that is if you really want to keep the laptop. If that solves it great! Also, did you notice if there are any "beep" noises, or error messages when it acts up? Often times, you can go on the internet and find out what the messages mean.
