Question about Toshiba MK2004GAL 20 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I can get into disc manager (to try and change my drive letter) but it will not let me change it. It gives me the option of changing my C drive and my D drive, but there is no letter connected to my mass storage device, and I cannot allocate it a letter either.

Put some media into your MASS STORAGE DEVICE,
and DISC MANAGER will assign a drive-letter,
and will let you change it.

I stored my photos and office files in maxtor external Drive and now it is not opening. but in disk management i can see the device volume. how can i recollect it?

Hi.. Please be very careful..Data recovery can be very very tricky! what i am about to show you is not easy and can damage your drive if not performed correctly.

I know you can see it in the device manager you need to set the drive to ACTIVE while your in the disk
management.
How many drives are you currently using. If you have a HD or CDrom drive that's using Drive letter F or G, try going to your device manager and changing the F or G to a higher letter. Sometimes when you plug a usb in, it tries to take one of those. If the usb shows after that, you can change it to a higher drive letter and then change your other drive back to the original one.
Another thing to do is just unplug one of your cdroms and add the old hard drive as a slave. Boot up and you should see it.

I clicked the Windows icon (Start button) in the Windows Taskbar, right clicked My Computer, and clicked Manage. This opens the Computer Management application.
On the left is a list of computer functions you can adjust. Click Storage - Disc Management.
The middle screen will split into a list of existing Hard Drives on the top (as seen in My Computer) and a lower list of all available discs, including Hard Drives and Removable Storage. If your drive is new, it should appear in this lower screen as a disc that is not initialized. Right click the grey area (with the drive description) and select Initialize.
After the process has finished, right click the hatch-marked area to the right of the drive description. You should see an option to create a New Volume. Select that and complete the additional steps through the Wizard. From here on it's pretty self-explanatory.

When this is completed you should be able to open My Computer and see your drive with whatever Drive Letter and Volume Name you chose to assign it.
good luck.

Can you feel the drive spinning at the power up?
If the computer makes a sound, without notifying you that the device is not recognized, here is something you can try.

Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Administrative tools
Computer Management
Storage
Disc Management

Now you should see your drive in the schematic below, right click on it and choose to assign new drive letter and paths. If there is no drive letter assigned to the drive, assign on, otherwise just choose the option to change the drive letter.

Hope this can help you.

Kind regards

How do I change the drive leter

I'm assuming what you need to do is re-assign your drive letter.

Follow the following steps meticulously. If you do not feel comfortable doing these steps , please find somebody with technical background to perform them for you.

Go to Control panel
Go to Administrative tools
Select Computer Management
Select Storage
Select Disc Management

Now you will see a list of hard drives and a bar graph below it showing all discs and partitions.

Right click on the disc what you want to rename on the bar graph.

Select "change drive letter and paths". This should not show you the current letter assigned (G or H)

Select change.

From the dropdown menu , select F and click okay. This should restore your drive to it's original drive letter.

If your drive letter is not available it means some other device is using this letter. Select the device or drive that has been assigned to that letter and change it first before trying to change your drive's letter to F.

I hope this can solve your problem.

How to i change the drive f back into what it was now dvd rw

If you are using Windows XP.

1. Find the 'My Computer' icon (usually located in our Start Menu)
2. Right-Click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'
3. Click on 'Disk Management'
4. In the bottom-right list, Right-Click the drive you want to change and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
5. Click "Change..."
6. Select a new drive letter and hit 'Ok'
7. Click 'Yes' to the warning that pops up after

You're done.

If you use Windows Vista, figure 1 below shows you how.

Figure 1:
Changing Drive Letters in Windows Vista
(http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsvista/ht/chdrlettervista.htm)
Here's How:
  1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
Tip: In a hurry? Type computer management in the search box after clicking Start. Choose Computer Management from the list of results and then skip to Step 4.
  2. Click on the System and Maintenance link.
Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the Administrative Tools icon and proceed to Step 4.
  3. Click on the Administrative Tools link.
  4. In the Administrative Tools window, open the Computer Management program.
  5. In the Computer Management window, locate the Disk Management option on the left and left-click on it.
If the Disk Management option is not visible, look under the Storage option by clicking the small arrow next to the word Storage.
  6. On the right-hand side of the screen, locate and right-click on the drive that you wish to change the drive letter of and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths....
  7. In the Change Drive Letter and Paths window, click on the Change... button.
  8. The Change Drive Letter or Path dialog box will appear. Choose the drive letter you wish to assign to this partition.
    Click OK.
  9. The Confirm window that appears advises you that "Some programs that rely on drive letters might not run correctly. Do you want to continue?".
Note: If you have software installed to this drive, the softwaremay stop functioning after a drive letter change. Nearly all softwaredefaults to the primary drive though, so this is rarely a concern.
  10. If you're sure you want to make this change, click Yes. Depending on the speed of your PC, the change should be nearly instant.
  11. You can now close the Computer Management and Administrative Tools windows.

You should plug in the thumb drive, wait for it to recognize it, and then right-click on My Computer. Select the Manage option. Inside the Computer Management window, go down to Disk Management on the right side. The left pane will show you all of your local drives (hard drives, CDRW, USB, Flash, etc...). If you see your thumb drive listed in the drives, you can right click on it and select "Change drive letter and path". This will allow you to pick the drive letter you want as long as it doesn't interfer with any other existing drive letter.

Windows likes to mess with drive letters. Try this:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
  7. Click OK.
I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem. If not try us again at Fixya.com
