Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Kenmore Washing Machine 110.20722990 Will not agitate or spin. Took it apart and found a broken coupling between motor and gearcase. Does this mean gearcase is out?

Should the gearcase turn freely or stop after a few turns? Seams to bind up when turning by hand but then will let you turn back other way.

Replace Coupling, Now it's making a rapid CLICKING noise.

That dark brown gunk is the oil from the gearcase (transmission). If you had the washer tipped back, or laid it down, you shouldn't have. The oil will leak out. Leaking oil is also a symptom of a transmission going bad. It sounds like you need to replace the gearcase now. They aren't that expensive if you shop around. Searspartsdirect.com and appliancepartspros.com carry them. The part number is 3360629. The following link explains how to replace one if you decide to perform this repair yourself:

If you have any questions, plese let me know. I hope this helps you.

Machine will not agitate

Washer has a motor coupling between gearcase and motor. This coupling is probably broken.

Spin cycle not working, agitator does not move

If it there is no agitation or spin, check the motor coupling. The motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission. Replace it if it is broken.

The part number is 285753A
Let me know if you need instructions on how to replace it.

If it's not broken, you may have a problem with the transmission/gearcase (10 year warranty, get it replaced!)
Good luck!

I have a Kenmore washing machine Model 82670110. It will drain the water but will not spin, it makes a very loud clicking noise when it should be spinning. Please help me know what to look for.

Is the clicking consistent with the motor cycling on and off (are the house lights flickering)?
If so, look for loose wiring at motor capacitor located inside the console.
If not, look for a broken motor coupling (connects motor to transmission), you will also have little to no agitation.
If the motor coupling looks ok, it could be the transmission (gearcase) that is defective. The transmission usually comes with a 10 year warranty so get it serviced.
Good luck!

Kenmore 110.24642300 won't spin

This sounds like a typical symptom of a broken motor coupling. Click on the following link for step-by-step instructions on how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

These instructions will give you the necessary information to take the washer apart to get to the motor coupling to see if it has failed. A tell tale sign is black rubber dust particles under the washer where the drive motor is located. Usually the rubber bushing shears apart, or the plastic tines break off the coupling itself. If the motor coupling is broken a replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the coupling can be found under the "Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump" heading on the next page as item number 13. The part number is 285753A. This is a very simple repair job. If need further assistance, or have any questions please let me know. For quicker responses to your questions, please go to my profile and use the "Ask Me" feature. I hope this is helpful to you.
