I think I scratched something inportant....PLEASE HELP ASAP!

Hi, I am a college student who just changed my major to Photography and just began taking photography classes this semester. We have just started working with the 35mm camera and I have a Canon AE-1 and I was shooting a role of film and realize that there were some particles and an eyelash somewhere. So, I took the lense off and tried to blow air inside but the particles were on the part that has the circle on it and the brush went across it. Now, I can barely see out of the lense period and I don't have a clue what to do. Did I ruin my camera? Please help me!!! I am a little freaked out! Thank you so much, hdstokes e-mail address is

Re: I think I scratched something inportant....PLEASE...

Do not worry. The part that is scratched or has some dirt on it is called fresnel lens ( or the focusing screen ) and scratches to this part will NOT effect quality of your pictures ( i.e. you will not see any of the scratches on your results ) . True it is a hassle to have to look through a dirty viewfinder but just ignore it for now and just take pictures.

I purchased a used Nikon FA camera for my daughter to use in her photography class. None of the pictures came out during developing. Any ideas what the problem could be? I was only given a 7 day return...

If it's still within the 7 days take it back. The Nikon FA was a great camera but time and lack of use has probably caused the shutter to seize. To put this camera back into serviceable condition for any photography will require a clean, lubrication and adjustment by a qualified camera person. I'm in Canada and have cameras service fairly regularly older ones to have this type of work performed will cost about $120.00 Canadian. The instructor is probably asking for the students to have a manual camera to be able to learn from the ground up which to me is the best way but, these old cameras are failing just because the grease is drying out. There are still a lot of good used working camera out there I just bought a great Canon Elan 7Ne for $199.00 CDN and it's a 2005 model the last year of the Canon film cameras. I guess it depends on if you want to spend the money (and time) to get the FA repaired or step into something for a little more money that works properly right from the get go.

Underexposure problem maybe? please help!

Your camera probably needs a new battery.
The light meter needs sufficient power (5.5v to 6v) to work correctly.

Your ISO could have moved, even a double or halving of it will over/underxpose a full stop.

White streaks on photos

Light leak, definately a light leak. You need to change or add foam around the chamber to prevent any light from entering.

Flashing Err and E/Error Problem

You might want to check the position of the aperture ring on the lens. If it is not set at the highest number, ( IE smallest aperture, f22,f32 ), then the camera will display that error message

Canon A1- Just stopped working

Get a dummy film and put it in the camera , make shure that the film is fully loaded on to the take up spool and test it all the way through, It sounds like the film is coming off the take up spool. I have repaired a lot of these A1's and they don't suffer from this problem. yours Tim 01689 818009..
