Micrografx Picture Publisher 8 not working with my Vista

Posted by janetdolls on Apr 18, 2009I have the same exact problem. This is the third machine I've loaded this program on. All the other programs in this suite work fine. However, when PP8 starts up, it stops and gives me this error message about my scanner then before I can finish reading the message so I can figure out how to try to fix it, the message goes away and so does the PP8 screen behind it. The only thing that will be left is the product logo in the center of my screen. I'm left to use Task Manager to get out of it completely.

Here are my system specs:

Dell Inspiron 530
Windows Vista Basic
HP Deskjet F4240 All-In-One

This is a brand new setup. To me, it doesn't make any sense that the other programs will work in the suite and this one doesn't.

Please let me know where I can find a fix. I use this program an awful lot and not having this one to work seriously craps my web development capabilities.

Thanks in advance.

Micrografx Picture works in XP but not in Vista. It does not connect with registry. It install fine but does not start at all. I used this program a lot, and I am used to its quirks, and it's hard for me to switch to Photoshop now.

I figured it out for myself. I'm trying to see where I can post the solution ... to no avail ... yet. However, until then, if you are having the same exact problem that I was having, email me and I'll send you the steps to the fix.

    Load program on computer
When complete leave disc in drive.
Now follow these steps in order to reset the compatibility:

Use an older program with this version of windows

I want to choose from a list of programs.

*If you have taken the disc out of the drive, put it back in the drive now.
*If a window opens to show you the files on the disc, close it.

    Scroll down and select

    Disable visual themes
    Disable desktop composition

Run this program as an administrator
    Test your compatibility settings
*Will show the name of program along with your earlier selections

An unidentified program wants access to your computer

*PP8 may ask for your scanner. I don’t know if it’s matters or not but I didn’t connect mine through this program. I have a HP and it’s really particular about how it’s connected. I closed the window.

    *Take disc out.

*Closing Notation: Your program will load its welcome screen page. I then tested all the shortcuts and links from my desktop. I even restarted my computer and it still works just fine.

    Hope this helps.

You know, you could be right, but then again maybe not. You can go on with Photoshop if you like, that's up to you. However, if you follow the steps I posted, it will work every time...without prompting. As a matter of fact, the entire suite runs like clockwork now.

PP8 worked fine with Windows 98 and Windows XP, the problem lies with Vista, not PP8. Therefore I see no reason to abandon it unless it's completely necessary, especially since there is nothing wrong with it.

I wish you good luck with Photoshop. I hear it's an absolute bear; not to mention 'very' expensive.

OK. I was so thrilled. My solution worked for about two weeks then started acting up again. I answer the prompt like I always have, but now the program won't let me see any on my files on my harddrive. The only solution to this is to have the files you want to edit within the Webtricity/PP8 subdirectory. That's the only way it will let you see them and pull them up. And once you can pull the photo/image in, your cursor turns every thing gray as it goes across it.

I have a lesser program that deals with photo editing that came with my HP Printer, but it's so much trouble to deal with that I'd rather learn something new.

So you know what? I'm tired. I saw a watered down version of Photoshop at Wal-Mart for $80.00 I'm buying it or something comparable this weekend that is Vista compatible.

I really hate change. Especially when it's forced on me. >;-( But maybe its for the best.

I solved it!
The software installs OK.
After installation, reboot.
When you need to open the program, right-click on the Micrografx icon and select Run as Administrator. A yellow window pops up saying "An unidentified program want access to your computer," with pp80.exe as "Unidentified program" - that is actually Micrografx Pictures. Click "Allow." The program runs normally. The only caviat is that you will have to perform this routine every time you have to run Micrografx Pictures. But again, it takes 5 seconds to do it, and I love the program, having used it for over 10 years. Photoshop is far more advanced but it takes time to master it, and I do with Micrografx the same quality work as many with Photoshop.
Of course, Janet, you and I have to come to grips with the fact that Micrografx is pretty much dead, and Photoshop is alive and blooming. Maybe this Vista incident is a sign for us to learn Photoshop?

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and I tried to install Picture Publisher 10 - at first with no luck (crashed upon opening) then I fixed it!! I had already installed both patches (the reg fix and the other, search online for them) then rebooted - and the "run as admin" didn't work, so I typed into the START/Search all programs and files box "compatibility" and the only thing on the list is "Run programs made for previous versions of windows". I know someone mentioned this for Vista but the path to it is not the same in Win 7 64 bit. Anyway, I followed those instructions, picked off the list Picture Publisher, let it do it's thing (run like XP etc) and it started fine!!! I am so happy! I cannot used that Photoshop junk, it is SO not intuitive. I have used PP since 1996 and have created thousands upon thousand of pictures for many web sites and of course my own work as a Photographer and it is still simply the best! Good luck!! So happy we are still bringing it along with us!!!!!

webmaster899... perhaps you can help me. I just purchased a 64 bit HP computer with Windows 7 premium. When I try to install Picture Publisher 8 which came with the Webtricity Suite... upon executing Setup.exe I get an error message that I need a 64 bit version. So I am not even able to install the program on the computer. Can you guide me through the steps you took to install Picture Publisher on your 64 bit computer? I have used PP since the first version way back in the 90's, and like it much better then the latest Corel Paintshop Photo Pro, which is supposed to be a more advanced version of Picture Publisher. I miss the masking tool features that were in PP8. Thanks for your help.

I have used micrografx for years and have both versions 8 and 10 working in windows 7.
If U are running Vista with Aero then U have to turn it off as the screen will not display inside Micrografx and it will clear the areas U touch.
I didnt need as others have suggested to run the compatabilty mode.
There is the odd crash when saving to a jpeg which I havent found a fix for yet other then rebooting the computer if it occurs and trying again. ( this generally works)
Micrografx is the only program that I have found that allows U to cutout an object because the lasso in all the other picture programs doesnt allow for backspacing of an error.
I wouldnt be runnig Win 7 if I couldnt run Micrografx is one of my must have programs because of ease of use and ability to do so much with the minimum of fuss.

Beautiful!!! Good News!!! For All MICROGRAFX DRAW 5 guys.
I was tired looking for patches to run mi MICROGRAFX DRAW 5 in 64bit computer, with no success. I gave up.
But I installed Windows 8 recently in my computer, and I found out that Windows 8 let me install my very loved program MICROGRAFX DRAW 5.
And it is running as it should be. really nice. I am really happy for it. I kicked windows 7 out.
As soon as Windows 8 received the installation command; it told me that a 16bit program needs a compatibility. Then it asked me if I want to have that.
I clicked YES; and Windows 8 did all the work. The program got installed seamless in seconds; with all the features.
Sincerely; Francisco.

Unable to use Micrografx Picture Publisher 10.0 with Win 7

Make sure that Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 pro installs into the X66 Program files folder.By default it will always install into the 64 bit program file if you have a 64bit installed.
If you have the 32 bit Windows 7 installed then right click with your mouse on the program before opening it up and select compatibility mode.Select XP SP3 compatibility mode. This works fine on my Windows 7 32bit. Use the first paragraph method if you have the 64bit Windows 7.

Just installed Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 from the original disc. When I try to run it, I get the following error Micrografx Picture Publisher Digital Camera Edition has stopped working It says...

I had the same message trying vista. Windows 7 offers running older programs in XP or even Win 98 SE mode. That fixed the problem for me. Further I recommend running it as administrator. Hope it helps.

I have Micrographx Picture pubisher 8 and just changed to new PC Windows 7. Now I am being told that Win7 is not compatible! Can you help please? Regards Peter

yes can be, just follow these steps:

Not compatible or not working well with windows 7?

Maybe, It doesn't work because the driver/application you installed is for other versions of operating system. I am also using windows 7 like you so don't you worry, You can still use your old installer/driver from other versions of operating systems. Just remember that before installing any program in a windows 7 Operating System Computer, Use "troubleshoot compatibility". Right Click the Icon of your program installer/application first, then choose "troubleshoot compatibility". This will allow you to choose on what type operating system your program will run. Just reply back if it still doesn't work.:D rate and vote for me:))

I am unable to open Micrografx Windows Draw 6. I used it for clip art but now it won't open.

Hello, I had the same problem. windows draw has been working for years under Windows XP then suddenly impossible. I think there is a conflict with others programs i installed.
I found THE solution after reading many topics on the net :
Install acrobat reader 4 on your system. Then run acrobat reader 4. Last, run Micrografx windows draw 6 while acrobat reader 4 is running on your system too.
Maybe it works with a more recent version of acrobat reader but i didn't try. Maybe this solution works also with windows draw 5 but i didn't try.
