As the article on wireball.com mentions, the replacement drive has to be internally set to "slave". Most new, replacement DVD drives for sale are set to "master" and won't work in the 1750. I successfully installed a Teac "dv-w22e" dvd-rw in my son's 1750. While the faceplate isn't a perfect match, these are a lot, lot cheaper than the OEM dvd-rom drives that were originally offered for the 1750. The original drive has an adapter screwed to the back of it that comes off and mounts on the replacement.
