Copying the MBR is necessary to boot into Windows.  The fact that you also copied the Partition Size is whats affecting your 500GB.  You'll need to Right Click My Computer and click Manage.  Then click on Disk Management.  That will bring up all the Physical disks in the right pane.  Right click the unallocated space on Drive 0 and make it NTFS and format it.

I have a similar problem, used Norton Ghost 15 trying to clone 60gb hdd up to 500gb hdd. I must have done the same thing, but now it doesn't after formating volume it still doesn't see any more space than the 54.9GB partition. Did I brick the HDD?

Ghost disc will not boot, not recognized as valid windows copy

If it's a Norton disk, call Norton, it should be bootable. If it's a disk you burned, it may not be a bootable system disk. Make sure your computer is set to boot from CD/DVD drive in the bios (setup) Press F2(usually, sometimes it's delete) while booting, go into setup, and make sure under boot devices/sequence that your disk drive is first in the boot sequence. Try the disk on another machine to see if it's the disk, or the machine. If it's the disk, Call Norton (if it's theirs) or have someone make another one for you.

Error Copying old c: drive w/Ghost 9

Do a disk defrag on the source drive. If that doesn't work, you may have a virus on your source drive and norton ghost is catching before getting on your destination drive.

I've seen a lot of flack about these puppies lately. It's usually due to the external enclosure, the harddrive is in, and not the harddrive itself.

It is for this reason, that I suggest that you take the harddrive out of this enclosure, and install it into a decent, affordable, new external enclosure.
External enclosures are relatively cheap!

The harddrive inside the Maxtor One Touch II is a desktop size harddrive. It's a 3.5 inch one.
(3 and a half inches across in width)
It is a Sata harddrive.

These are examples of external enclosures for a Sata 3.5 inch harddrive,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2780&name=3.5-eSATA-enclosure&Nav=|c:2778|&Sort=0&Recs=10
(My recommendation would be the Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360 Su-BL)

This external enclosure has instructions, is easy to install the harddrive, and uses a USB cable just like your old one.

Hard drive goes out in the middle of copying

Most of the time the problem can be solved by using a cable that is really short and of good quality.

or try another usb slot and see whether the problem repeats.

Now if the external drive is FAT (most of them come from factory as FAT formatted) and u are trying to copy files grater than 4GB, it will fail as FAT cannot recognize files larger than 4GB. SO you may try to format the external drives into NTFS, if thats the case.
