Tighten Gas Cap Error Message

I continue to get a ''tighten gas cap'' indicator when I have a tight gas cap (and check ingine light on).  I had thought perhaps it was a faulty gas cap itself, so I bought a new one, but that had not fixed it (and I had reset the truck's check engine light, and it wound up coming back).  Other symptoms I have are that I can't seem to fill up my gas tank, I can generally only get to 3/4 tank on a regular fill, and if I'm REALLY slow, I can get to 7/8.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Chris

Seems that your vent hose on the tank is plugged so the tank is over pressurrizing sending the error code and not allowing you to fill it all the way unclog the vent tube and this will solve the problem

Tighten gas cap message and then check engine light on 2008 suzuki xl7

there is a DTC error stored, in the ECU. (scan tools show this)
there is a car puter, error, message that really means
the gas tank is not holding air pressure.."EVAP sys"
and 99% of the time, that is "a loose gas cap"
it can take many driving cycle to clear this code.
or 1second with any scan tool, even a $30 tool.

Have a check engine Light and the shop says it is gas cap..reset check engine and all was well for about three weeks and back on again. Checked the gas cap and when you tighten the cap it continues to spin...

There is a rubber gasket on your gas cap, normally that is the problem. If it doesn't seal tight enough the tank isn't pressurized and that sets the error codes. You can either replace the gas cap or replace the seal or add another rubber gasket.

On my Lincoln, I was getting that code quite a bit, even after replacing the gas cap, so I added another rubber gasket and haven't had that code again.

Hi have a pontiac G6 GT 2005 I have a message that comes on saying check gas cap the 1st time it happened it was under warranty and the dealership replaced the gas cap for me, a year later the same thing...

The fuel cap needs to be tight or it will set a code. It's a pressurized fuel system. Try to tighten snug the code should clear itself. If this does'nt work exchage the fuel cap, it may not be working properly.

I have honda odyssey and the service engin coms on and the cod is p1456 so ineed to figur out thanks.

This probably means:
  • P1456: Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank System)
  • Usually this is because your gas cap was not fully tightened. Be sure to turn it until you hear a click.
  • After you tighten the cap, it might take a couple days of driving before the light goes-out.
  • Be careful to tighten your gas cap regularly, because otherwise it puts a heavy strain on your emission system.

Check Gas Cap alarm comes on and engine light is on

You gas cap is not on tight enough to seal causing the Check Engine Light to come on. When you tighten your gas cap you need to tighten it until it clicks at least 5 times, if it is tight than the seal on the gas cap may be bad. Replace with a OEM GM gas cap or a quality replacement that meets OEM specs.

My engine light stays on and the message "Tighten fuel cap" keeps coming on and off on my esaclade ESV 2005. Is there a recall for this?

I'm having the same problem with my 2006 Escalade; replaced the gas cap for $40 and a week later still having the same issue.....

I am getting a tighten gas cap message, however cap is on and tight. Check engine light is on

The gas cap is most likely faulty. The gas cap is an integral part of the evaporative emission system. If it is not sealing or venting properly, it can affect the proper operation of this system. I would replace the gas cap and have the check engine light reset at an autoparts store. Most stores will scan/reset computer for free. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Check gas cap indicator light

Hi. this situation concerns a lose gas cap that you may have forgotten to tighten correctly during a recent fill up at your local gas station or, it could be that the original gas cap or replacement gas cap is not sealing the cap area correctly, preventing proper fuel pressure.

Check the gas cap to see if its tight and that it clicks when you turn it. make sure you turn until it clicks. this will ensure a secure fit.

Now, if you have just recently bought a new replacement cap, it may be the wrong fit and i would recommend purchasing the original replica form the dealership to ensure a tight fit.

Please rate and god bless:)
