I have the problem and my father-in-law (who is much more of a handyman than me) suggested that I lubricate chain and roller chambers with White Lithium Grease and spray Silicone spray on the springs. It fixed my problem! Now my wife is happy.

I have attempted to adjust the limiters on the door. After activating the door it lowers a short distance then returns open with the light flashing five times.

The Craftsman GDO has a RPM sensor that, if not working correctly, will cause this problem. Either the optical sensor itself is dirty, or more likely, the wheel that is attached to the motor shaft has slipped. This is also a common problem if you have changed the worm drive. The motor shaft has about 3/16" of play (in and out) and if you do properly re-assemble the collar and leaf washer this play will prevent the RPM wheel from working properly.

Most likely the sensors on the base of the door are misaligned

I have this same problem periodically. I fix it by manually closing the door and then letting the truck re-engage the door and everything is fine......unitl next time.

Craftsman garage door opener problem

If you have eliminated the obstruction sensor, I would suggest a few things. Is the door spring set at the proper tension - usually check by releasing the door safety and manually closing/opening the door. It should balance about halfway up/down. Openers have limit switches for travel, if one is incorrectly positioned or faulty, it can cause similar issues. Openers have torque limit controls, if the motor thinks it is working too hard it will stop. Is the door greased and moving freely when you manually tested it for the spring tension? Are the gear sprockets firm and greased?

Garage door opens about 4 inches, stops, then goes back down. No flashing lights at all. One sensor light is green, the other is a steady yellow. What's the issue?

something may be obstructing the door, so pull the red emergency release handle and try to pull the door manually.if you cant move it manually, call for professional help

make sure all snow and debris are clear of the area where the door closes

if there are no obstructions, manually set the adjustment controls on the back side of the opener panel. weather can sometimes change the amount of force needed to open/close. adjust the setting with a screwdriver to no more than 260 degrees, about 3/4 of a turn

Have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener, been working fine. Now when you start it you hear the motor running as normal but the chain doesnt move?

You must ensure the drive chain is engaged to the door puller.
Sometimes the emergency release if pulled (red cord) the drive and the coupling come separated.
Make sure the pin is back in place (pull release cord and make sure pin springs back in).
The run an open close cycle, it should pick up the drive again.

My door opener is a Searcraftmans 1/2 hp. The door opens about 2 feet and stops. Press the button and it closes. Door moves freely when disengaged. Any suggestions

You most likely have a stripped drive gear. Remove the cover from the motor unit and it will be obvious if this is the case. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor.

My older Craftsman garage door opener comes down about 6" & then goes back up. I just replaced all the rollers o& the opener worked fine. Then I tightened the chain on the opener & it worked ok...

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door goes back up it is a door sensor problem. You chain should sag just a little. If you tighten it too much it will click as it goes over the sprocket. You can increase the down force which is an adjustment near where all those white wires go. A 1/4 turn should be enough. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. It should move freely and when you have the door approximately waist high it should stay put. Neither raising nor closing.

Garage door opens about 2 feet and then closes in same cycle

There is an issue with the limit settings. They are the three white screws you can see with the cover off. Put the door in the down position. take the small white piece off the bottom of the gear and sprocket assembly. Turn the center screw until the silver "wing" is at the bottom position. Put the white piece back on the bottom of the gear and sprocket. Adjust the up screw until the door opens fully. Check the force settings. They both should be set on 4-5.
