How do i get this computer to get a internet connection

If you can get into the Internet with another computer then your DSL modem is configured correctly.
Check the LAN driver in the $5 laptop is working and enabled, if not then install the LAN driver.
You can download the LAN and device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the Windowsdrivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download thedrivers: -
www.compaq.com/country/cpq_support.html
Connect a LAN cable from the $5 laptop to the DSL modem and open IE and you should get into the Internet.

Compaq Presario 5220 Desktop Windows 98 internet: Dial-up Can a DSL card be installed or would I need to go with a wireless USB? And would wireless USB work on Win98?

You can install a network card inside the computer. You will need a PCI or an ISA card. (I know PCI network cards are easy to find at most of the computer shops.) See this site for how to install a card: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07111&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=93139 . However you should open your computer and check the space between the devices in the slots in the computer. There is an AGP slot with a video graphics card, 1 PCI/ISA slot with a modem (default specs), one free ISA slot and one free PCI slot. However depending on the graphics card one of these slots may be blocked by the card. You'll either need to get a card that fits the available slot or remove the modem and use that slot.

Here are some PCI 10/100 network cards: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=587&name=10-100%20Ethernet%20PCI/ISA . Most of these are compatible with Win98. I'm not sure if there are any gigabit NIC with Win98 drivers.

Wired and wireless USB NIC adapters exist. However, you will be limited to the USB speed. If you have USB 1.1, that will be really slow. Most likely your computer will require a reboot anytime the connection is lost.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(who recently removed an internal modem to put in a PCI gigabit card in a newer desktop than yours. The procedure was straightforward and improved network performance in the household immensely. The failing on-board NIC was tying up the router for everyone.)

Cannot connect to the internet wireless or wired.Tools show that it is disabled and I tried everything to enable it but it will not change. The blue wifi indicator light is orange and has been since it...

If the problem is there both wired and wireless, the problem is then narrowed to your computer's modem/nic device. Speak with a Laptop repair tech about replacing this bit of hardware. When did you lose connection with Internet? Recently or long ago?

Internet connection on compaq presario 2100

If you have a DSL connection or Cable and hook up a new computer, you may have to reset the hardware (turn it off and on). If you have a Cable connection which you also use for a phone, you will have to also remove the battery from the modem to reset it.
I am assuming that when you go into the device manager you see the network adapter and it doesn't have any caution symbol or an "x" on it to indicate a problem.
You must also be sure you are not using an ethernet cable that is damaged.
If you are trying to connect wirelessly, you must have a router that is properly configured and your wireless adapter must be enabled on your computer.

Presario 900 laptop what internet dongle do i need to connect to internet.

that completely depends on what kind of internet service you have.
The laptop has a Ethernet connector so, if you have a internet connection in your home you should be able to connect it with a wire to the router or the modem and it should work.

Can I add a NIC card to my compaq presario pc sr5250nx? I keep loosing my internet connection every five minutes and have to reboot the computer to reconnect

you should be able to
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00840496.pdf

if your system is still within warranty I would think twice about opening the case yourself to installing a new network card.. you will be voiding your warranty.. so think about it

another thing i would try before deciding on going for another network card is to check your onboard network adapter has updated drivers... or you may want to reinstall the drivers for that adapter.. either one of those may probably fix your issue assuming is not a hardware failing given that your system may not be that old.... make sure you check the windows update and look for any new hardware driver for your network adapter that may be avaliable through windows update.

before you install your new network pci card you may have/want to disable the one on board going into your bios for that. so to ensure there's no resource conflicts when installing the driver for your new card (it may not be a problem even if you don't but if you run into problems while installing the new card consider this suggestion)

Can I get the internet on compaq armada 1700 laptop?

That phone line will only be for actual phone lines.. as it will be a modem.

If the lappy has an ethernet port (slightly larger than a phone port, but looks the same) you could use that with an ethernet cable to a DSL modem. (the modem has the phone wire plugged into it)

Most laptops have an ethernet port, but yours might be a bit too old perhaps? If that's the case, you can buy either a USB to ethernet adapter (but you might not have that either) or a PCMCIA ethernet card. The latter will definitely work for you, and can be bought second hand VERY cheaply... if not for nothing.

I really hope it has something a bit newer than '95 though... otherwise just getting the internet to work could be a problem. Good luck!
