Lacie d2 120Gb Firewire 400 won't start/spin

First, I want to apoIogize if this probelm has already been addressed. I couldn't find though. Anyway I just used the HD for the first time in months, encountered the same problem on SIX different MAC laptops:

- the blue light comes on, does not flicker, just stays on.
- disk not spinning up/starting up.
- doesn't mount either.
- I checked the Firewire cable, even used a different one - no change.
- I then plugged in my iPod via Firewire, to see if that port on my computer was fualty. The iPod DID work.
- Apple System Profiler detects an "Unknown Device"
- Green Light on Power Supply box is on.
- There is an odd hum that wasn't present before coming from power supply.

I am really hoping it is just the power supply!!! I have been reading that some of these power boxes can die but still provide enough power to illuminate the blue light, but not the HD itself.

Thanks in advance for your help everyone.

Just forget about - it was just stupid power supply. Time to buy a new one.

What you have is a common hard drive in an enclosure, check eBay or OWC (google it) and get an enclosure for the drive (I would take the drive out first and make sure it is ata not a newer sata, other world computing will reply to an email and I have used them in the UK and Canada, they are in the USA) the enclosure should be cheap ($20 or so)

How do I find a repair person for a LaCie 1 TB external drive?

it may be a bad drive and depending what is on it it would be very evpensive to fix. you can remove the drive from the case and plug it in another computer with a spare sata slot and try it. if it wont spin up it is bad. only three definits in life: death, taxes and hard drive crashes. sorry hope that it will work on anothe computer.

1 TB Esata/FireWire400/USB 2.0 disk problem, one flashing light

have you checked the output on the power adapter when you plugged in? if not, there is no hard reset for the drive. you just have to isolate the board on you external hdd.

Hi I am Vortash sorry to say it sounds like you have destroyed the HD , they are really quite delicate and have watch like precision spindles on the drive and the read arm .. An impact such as dropping them usually destroys these spindles and the hard rive is totally useless .
It is doubtful that you will ever be able to read from it again , regards Vortash

Deference Lacie d2 Quadra1TB/Lacie big disk ?

It's all about the interfaces.
The Quadra has four interfaces: • eSATA • FW 400 • FW 800 • USB 2.0
The triple has all but the eSATA interface listed above.
For doing video work you want a big drive with a fast interface. If you have eSATA available then that's the fastest. If you don't then you're just as well off to go with the triple interface. The FW 800 would be the next fastest, then the USB 2.0, then the FW 400.
Because of the way that data is transferred I believe that when doing video work you would be best served by the FW 400 instead of the USB 2.0 even though the USB is faster I don't believe it is a full duplex communication so the FW 400 is actually better for video.

Having Problem with both LaCie hard drives being recognized on both macs

Try to connect to another computer, and see if it recognizes the drive. If Not, you can dismantle LaCie and take the disk out.

Connecto your disk to another external box (USB or Firewire) so you can have access to you data.

LaCie FireWire drive

I would seek out the latest drivers for the card in addition to checking to see the firewire card is properly installed. I would test the cable with another or ports. The D2 has a various array and combination of Firewire ports on each model. Also, try bringing the drive to another computer, to eliminate all other variables. Always of course, properly eject external hardrives and wait for confirmation whenever disconnecting it from the computer, and allow the drive to spin down before turning it off.
