Its just warning you that the hub is sapping too much power from the imac, newer hubs are only a couple of $$ and are much more power efficient, try somewhere like dealextreme.com

Try a powered USB hub. I have had this problem with a PC and even plugging two devices into a hub with its own power supply fails sometimes.

INSUFFICIENT POWER - USB PORT
If you get an error message "Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug a USB device into the computer's USB port or the un-powered USB hub that is attached to the computer's USB port, then this device is drawing excessive current that the USB port cannot supply. The maximum output from an USB port is 500mA. In case such as this, you need to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer's USB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.

Usb over current error 701

The USB port can only deliver aprox. 500mA. If your USB device such as a scanner etc. draws more current from the USB port then you will get this error message.
The solution is you use a powered USB device OR use a powered USB hub and connect this to the computer/laptop's USB port and then plug the USB device into the powered USB hub.

Supply voltage needed

power supply should be +5VDC/2.5A,

as this "masterpiece" was not that hot when it was first made (year 2000!) i would suggest rather purchase of new hub than wasting money on power supply for that one.

Lost mt power supply cable, can you tell what the input voltage is for the HUB 4U is?? Also can his be used om a Mac OX 10.4.11 Dave

Since the manufacturer is out of business, it is hard to find any information on this hub, but you can find more details here or here (for Mac).

The voltage for the adapter has to have an output of +5VDC with minimum 2.5A.
Important!!! - The inner post is positive and the barrel is negative.

And - yes - it can be connected to a Mac since both versions are technically identical.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Western Digital Passport 160 GB external HD won't load.

WinXP SP2 blocks the use of the drive because it thinks it draws too much power. But there is a simple procedure to override this (from WD site):

"Problem:
Under Windows XP, an error message of "Power Surge on Hub Port" or "USB device has exceeded the power limits of it's hub port" is displayed when connecting a USB device to a USB port on a computer or Hub.

Cause:
Under some computers, USB devices are only allowed to draw a maximum of 500 milliamps (mA) per connection from the USB port on the computer system or from a USB hub. Under the Windows XP Operating System, with the release of Service Pack 2, if a device attempts to draw more than this (500 milliamps), a USB port balloon message is displayed to indicate this over current condition. When connecting a USB device that draws power from the USB bus, a very brief over current condition is sometimes detected by the OS, and the warning message is displayed.

Resolution:
This message has no affect on the functionality of the USB port. The USB hard drive should still function correctly on the USB port regardless of the error message. To prevent the USB Power Surge Alert message from displaying, please complete the following steps:
Click on Start.

Click on Control Panel.

Double-click on the System Icon.

Click on the Hardware Tab.

Click on the Device Manager button.

Click on the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the selection.

Right-click and select Properties on any listing that displays USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER.

Click on the Advanced Tab.

Check the box that says: Don't tell me about USB errors."

This works fine, and the drive works fine afterwards. I suspect it actually draws less power than they say. Maybe it has a brief power draw spike on startup, but it's running power seems less. In any case, it works fine without the Y cable. I do think it is tacky that WD doesn't give the cable for free, since my $7 Sabrent 2.5" Hard drive enclosure came with a y cable.

But most likely the drive will work fine for you. It is a lovely quiet drive, and takes up no space at all.

Usb port on Acer aspire 5050

Be safe rather than sorry, get yourself a Powered USB Hub.

One of the problems with USB is that a device is only allowed to draw up to 500mA of power (100mA on first connection). So, if you buy a non-powered hub, it will only support one high-power (500mA) peripheral, and the other ports on that hub may be useless. Plug a mixture of devices into a non-powered hub and some might work while others might not. Since people expect to be able to plug any USB device into any USB port, I think this is really bad. Using a powered USB hub generally eliminates the problem.
