Today suddenly my 4runner 98 V6 started to rattle in a slow gear and when going uphill the car had a sulfur smell but only when pushing it uphill the engine light came on but turned off after 10 minutes the problem still is the same. It seemed to run fine when going downhill or on a horizontal road. Michaela

Take it into your mechanic ASAP before you throw a rod and destroy your engine, check oil level also...DO NOT DRIVE IT ANYMORE or you may be looking for another car soon.

Yes it can. The knock sensor retards the timing due to irregular levels of octane in todays gasoline, to eliminate or reduce what is called a spark knock. A malfunction could cause your car to lose power when car is under a load or uphill due to pre detonation or constantly retarded spark to the engine. If not replaced it can cause engine damage or head gasket damage. Hope this helps.
rattling when doing what? if it rattles when it is running or when it is driving, this will tell you roughly where to look. If rattling while idling, coming from engine or transmission. If you ONLY hear it when you are driving, check you U joint. they can wear out and start to rattle and clunk sometimes, especially when going in and out of gear...reverse to drive etc...
sounds from afar like a problem i had after installing after market spark plug cables on a diff. car. make sure you have factory-quality/ even mits. brand cables. (right parts vs. after mkt.?- no contest.)
you should also start by draining the old fuel if the car has been sitting that long because the fuel does go off and will allow car to start but not praform
I noticed going from a Higher Grade gasoline as well as making sure I change my motor oil on a regular basis (3,000-5,000 mi)to solve this problem. When the car isn't driven at a high RPM for a while, and you go to a quick acceleration it causes this smell.
hi it sounds like you've "cooked" the engine lost all water and blown headgasket unfortunatly this will be a very expensive repair and depending on the amount of damage to the top end COULD mean a replacement engine chris
