My panasonic tz5 has started playing up. The lens moves in & out, will not focus & a message 'please turn camera off and on again' appears. This happens each time I want to use it. The battery is charged. Turning the camera on & offf doesn't solve it. Also, on two occasions, I have lost some of my photos due to a 'card read error'.

Here's another one. But I can attribute it directly to a fall it took
and the extended lens took the brunt of the hit. Funny thing is it
actually worked for a couple weeks after till just suddenly lapsing
into this cycle of not being able to focus then the message to restart.
I'm resigned to repair but have no idea where? jrwi mentions Illinois? More info please!!! I'm ready to ship it.-   Chuck6421

-   I had the same problem with the Tz5 barrel extending all the way out and the camera going out of focus. Upgrading to firmware 1.2 and shutting it off and on postponed the inevitable. The problem got worse until finally the display would no longer appear.
Should I send it to Illinois for repairs or throw it away and buy a new one? I haven't decided yet.
I really loved this camera. It takes great pictures and pretty good video athough the audio has a lot of hiss.

Same problem. At least for now, I solved problem, or at least camera is working again, by putting mode dial in "normal" (not A1) and holding down menu and down button (macro button) while turning camera on. Hope it works for you and continues to work for me.

When turning it on, a message shows: "Turn off th camera and turn it on again" (but in Swedish - bought in Sweden). The lens doesn't retract when turning off.
