SOURCE: Connecting Sony Handycam DCR-HC14E to iMac

There is a great manual here:
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/ShowExternalPage.action?product=DCR-HC14E&supportProductModelName=DCR-HC14E&linkType=manual&isRegistered=false&site=odw_en_GB&pageType=manualPopup&sectiontype=Support&externalUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fpdf.crse.com%2Fmanuals%2F3089850112.pdf&externalLinkType=manual
And in short the I.link is a 1394 port or firewire port
You should be good to go

make sure that you are using the correct firewire plugs (4 pin on the camera and 4 or 6 pin on the computer depending on the computer). If you are sure you have all this correct, check your BIOS settings for a disabled media card or 1394 controller.

UNABLE TO TRANSFER VIDEO FROM SONY HANDYCAM DCR TRV TO MY LAPTOP

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Computer.

Refer this link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE: As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Driver for DCR-HC28

It's not possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Vista running Computer using a USB connection.
The Camcorder uses the USB STREAMING function to transfer the videos to the Computer. The Vista doesn't support the USB STREAMING function.
However, you may transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using an i.LINK/FIREWIRE cable.

If your Computer has an i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on it you can connect the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/FIREWIRE cable.

The i.LINK port is a D shaped port labelled as DV, i, IEEE1394, Firewire.

If the i.LINK port on the Computer has 4 pins on it, then you can use a 4-pin to 4-pin i.LINK cable.
If the i.LINK port on the Computer has 6 pins on it, then you can use a 4-pin to 6-pin i.LINK cable.
The i.LINK port on the Sony Camcorder is a 4-pin i.LINK port.

I will forward a link to a page where you can get the steps to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK connection.

Vista driver for dcr-trv280

I had the same problem. Spoke with Sony support. The drivers are there for Vista, but you have to connect the TRV280 from it's "DV" port to the Firewire port of you computer/laptop. I purchased a cable that has small firewire connectors on both ends. USB will not work with Vista. Once it is connected, a popup should ask you what you want to do, ie, capture video, etc. No other software required. Good Luck.
