you should only use vista with a system that came with it.. you cant upgrade to vista on an older machine because of many reasons, like front side bus speed RAM, 32bit and 64 bit,etc...I know you should be able to but there are just too many problems with vista..too many files, applications, drivers are not compatible..Vista does have its first service pack to download if you dont allready have it-which may help

In this case if your sound max did not support your OS you need to Install the lower version of OS which is compatible to your soundmax driver, because higher version did not support the other driver,

Upgrading of OS from Windows XP to Windows Vista

I looked up your motherboard and found some posts that suggest that the onboard VGA may be the problem you're having with Vista - using an another video card will probably allow you to install and operate Vista on your machine.

Motherboard and OS problem

There is likely a reason that you are re-installing a OS.
Your HD is Dead.
You should buy a new Hard Drive and install the OS on that.

Another option would be ,.. you have other OS's that were not properly installed and the hard drive is telling you that there is a prob like a F6 driver issue.
Depends on what OS was installed on it to begin with.
