Check your speed selector switch. If it's in between settings, it'll cause the symptoms you describe.

There ya go! The diagnosis is a failed speed selector switch. If you could provide the model number, I'll look up the parts for you. (the model number is on the top panel underneath the lid in the back.)

    Wash,
The part number you'll need is a 3406241.Here's a picture of it. If you don't have a local appliance parts retailer, you can order it from that link or you can get one from Sears. (Or you can just plug the part number into a search engine and price shop... I found one here for $37.25!)

Watch this video to learn how to access the controls...

That's all there is to it! (Please don't forget to "upgrade" the rating of this solution, Thanks!)

Yes, following the instructions in the video (above), remove the cabinet. Down at the motor, you'll see a wire harness that connects to it. Make sure that all the wires are connected tightly.

If that checks out OK, the next suspect is the timer. In order to definitively determine what the culprit is, I'm afraid some advanced diagnostic tools/skills will be required. In this case, I recommend calling a local appliance repair company. Find out what their service call/diagnostic charge is (ours is $65 for arrival, diagnosis and repair quote... if our customer chooses to have the repair done, we discount the diagnostic charge by 50%.) and hire a qualified tech to come diagnose it using his test equipment so you know EXACTLY what is going on here.

I'm sorry that I directed you to the wrong conclusion to your washer problem. This is, after all, a free on line repair service. I do my best (based on my knowledge of all of the makes and models on the market) to conclude the appropriate repair. Your's, however is a bit of a conundrum.

Kenmore 90 series with speed selector switch set to heavy duty cycle it works fine any other setting , regular , hand wash setting the agitator makes a loud clicking sound as it agitates

sounds like a transmition problem. does the noise happen when it goes into spin on the other settings? If no noise in the spin cycle on the other setting, then it sounds like a the gears in the transmition internally when bad for the agitation.

Get a repairman in to check for a damaged drive train on the washer and an electrician in to check the wiring in your house

Switching a high power electric shower on can cause some voltage drop which in turn causes the lights to dim for a short period.

But having a washer stalling on wash doing it sounds as if you have some major issues with the house wiring.

Kenmore series 70 washer won't stop agitating when lid Is lifted.

I have a Series 80 and when I lift the lid it does not stop aggitating when in wash mode. When I lift the lid it does stop spinning when in rinse mode. As designed.

To stop wash-mode aggitation at lid-lift, using the existing lid switch and other electrical components, is not easy and not recommended. I can think of a way to do it (triple-pole lid switch) but I will not detail the idea .. for safety concerns.

To stop aggitation, simply use the main settings dial control. You'll save money and possibly prevent a fire hazard!

Aggitator won't work and won't spin/ drains ok

Coupling is bad.
There is a coupling between the motor and the transmission. When this part breaks then it will pump the water out but won't spin or aggitate.
