Question about Sony VAIO Notebook

1 Answer

I have a problem with my Sony Vaio VGN- FZ112 laptop which I have bought over 2 years ago (therefore no warranty on it). I cannot start the laptop. When I press power on button the light switches on, every possible light switchs on, but the actual screen stays black. I am lost as to what can be the problem apart from a hardware issue?

^ cheers for the above, i have tried connecting an external screen, however the problem still remained,i.e. the computer being non responsive apart from the power button being switched on, blu ray disk working and a little noise coming from both fan and hard drive for a couple of seconds when i switch the compuetr on, nothing actually happens on the screen. i think its more to do with faulty motherboard then anything else, which means an expensive repair might be the only option...

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp, follow this to determine the fault.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Try reseating the RAM modules and the boot up the laptop. or Try getting the RAM tested at your friendly computer shop.

Faulty RAM or seating problems with RAM will cause nil response from the laptop as well as faulty motherboard.

It may not be cost effective to replace the motherboard, in this case, salvage the hard disk and insert it into an USB hard drive case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

It is extremely difficult to help you with the limited information that you provided. You should have given a better description of your problem.

In your 2nd comment you mentioned the Blu ray disk was working, do you mean that the disk draw can open and close by pressing the drive button, or you can do something with the drive? If you can play an audio CD in this drive and hear music, then the laptop is functioning OK and the problem is the monitor.

Did you try as I instructed by connecting an external monitor to the video port, power up the monitor first and the the laptop? I was only trying to determine if your laptop is functioning OK and to see if it was only experiencing a LCD screen problem.

That sounds like you require a new/replacement screen.
Check your date of purchase with a warranty repair in mind.
Do it quickly as it may still be covered.

Problem in Sony Vaio VGN-CR320E´s motheboard

would you have been happier if you had a 3-year warranty on your machine? I suggest you try to compare between buying a new motherboard to buying a whole new notebook...the latter usually is more reasonable. Again, get an extended warranty

Wireless problem

Check in the network settings if the wireless network card isn't disabled.. if windows has disabled it you can flick the switch as much as you like it wont help.

If you dont know where to re enable it, let me know what version of windows you are running... and ill set out more detailed instructions

PS.... As a general rule of thumb, you could have bought something worse than a Sony Vaio, not bad choice....

Problem Playind DVDS

Even the most basic pc should be able to play DVD's, firstly try a different dvd player sofware, see if any change and don't have any programmes running in the background. If you still have the same problen, i would return to your retailer and ask for a exchange, because some companies do not like you messing with the hardware or settings, and of course can void your warranty.
