Question about Computers & Internet
Ny computer does not shut down when i press shutdown windows shuts down wellbut not the computer. it is is an ibm with a pentium 4 running xp.
A lot of IBM laptops do not have Nvidia graphics. Shutdown errors can be caused by many reasons including bad drivers and programs that do not shut down properly. It can be tough to isolate the specific problem. Here is what I did with my IBM laptop when it had this problem. I hope it works for you!
Windows XP Freeze at Shutdown with IBM Laptop: I had this problem while setting up an IBM T43p with XP Pro from the IBM Product Recovery disks. After much frustration I found the problem was a bad driver. In Device Manager>System Devices I uninstalled "Atmel TPM legacy device," a Trusted Platform Module driver. The T43p would then shutdown and restart without a hitch.

Go to Start > Run and type services.msc. Locate the nVidia Driver Helper item and right click it. Select Properties. Set the startup value of the service to “Manual” or “Disabled”.
Your computer should shut down normally now.
