I was cutting the lawn just fine with my weedeater and then all of the sudden it shut off. Now when I try to start it it the pull cord is locked and it won't do anything. Any idea what the issue is?

I had the same exact problem with a Ryobi model. I completely disassembled the unit including removing the crankshaft from the crankcase. It worked for a couple of months afterwards but locked up again on me this past weekend.

Once again, I took the thing apart, but this time it did not solve the problem. I'm hoping someone has a solution since the tool is only a year old and I don't want to have to purchase a new one.

    Thanks!

SOURCE: gas weed eater pull cord wont retract after pulling cord

remove the cover and the screw holding the recoil down, turning the pulley ccw should release the spring then wind rope around pulley and (hopefully yours has the slot in it) wind in the direction of the pulley teeth then, holding rope in slot put back on spring and wind cw till almost tight, and install screw. Usually you can do this without taking rope handle off. sometimes you have to remove handle. look at spring end in the middle and make sure its not broke as long as you have it apart. Its a easy fix.
Thanks for using fixya

This is a parts site for you with a schematic so you can see what is going on. I think your return spring is either broken or out of it's keeper. Check it out. hope this helps.

SOURCE: replace pull cord Big Wheeled weed EaterString

First, remove the recoil assembly but dont disassemble!
You'll need about 3 1/2 ft. of the same size rope. Tie a knot into one end of the rope. While holding the pulley in place observe the direction the pulley moves when rope is pulled. Release pulley and cut and remove old rope. Continue winding pulley in direction rope would pull it. Do no wind too tight. Line up holes in recoil housing and pulley then push rope through pulley and out housing. Tie on handle and install recall in reverse order.

SOURCE: Weed Eater PE550 - How do you change the spring

Lay the unit on it's side, carborater down. Removed the 3 screws holding hold the gear assembly housing. Hold the clutch assembly inside a cloth with a wrench and remove the nut. Left from the starter cup as a stack and set aside. There is a starter retaining ring on the shaft. Pull this with a long nose plyers. If it spings free, it is easy to loose. Then left out the starter pully. The starter spring is under the pully. Remove it with a sharp pointed tool. A broken one is crusted in rust and will be snapped off inside the coil.

Pull on cord for weed eater y 28 yard machine hard to pull how do i repair it

Hmmmmm. The question is why does it pull hard to begin with? Did the pull cord get wrapped around the pulley in an awkward manner or is the machine seized up? If it's not to difficult, pull the muffler off the machine and look at the piston. If it looks scored (lines up and down the piston through the rings) It's shot and probably not worth fixing. But, If everything looks good, then I'd pull the starter assembly off and see if there's something going on there that's doesn't look right.

Sounds like the starter dogs are broken. They are little plastic teeth that engage to turn the engine when you pull the cord. You'll need to replace the whole starter assembly to fix this.

Replacing pull cord on weedeater

there is another t20 screw in the neck of the drum. once removed you will expose the drive clutch. soak it good with WD40 then unscrew it from the shaft. if you have all the housing screws out, you should be able to simply remove the housing to expose the pull cord assembly, screwed to housing.
