Film advance lever

I am unable to advance the film because the lever will not wind all the way. It doesnt move the film take up spool. How do i get the film to advance?

After not using my Pentax ME Super for several years, I decided that several digital cameras I have used have too much shutter lag to get the action pictures I want. So I took out my old Pentax ME Super to inspect it.

I cocked it one time with the film advance lever, but it did not cock the shutter. Instead, the shutter release button acts like it is not cocked. When you press it nothing happens. The film advance lever now moves about 30 degrees but then stops. The mirror is stuck in the 'up' position because looking through shows black.

I removed the lens and the mirroris indeed stuck in the up position. I can bring it down using the lever that is just inside on the left side of the open lens area, but it will not stay down. It just pops back up where it wants to stay.

It appears that the problem is related to the shutter mechanism that is supposed to raise the mirror when the shutter is released. Apparently, the whole apparatus has deteriorated during the long period when it was not used. I have 3 Pentax lenses with the standard bayonette mount (K mount?) that I would like to use with it or some other newer film camera, if necessary.

Do you have any info on whether this is an expensive repair? Also, do new film camera models take the Pentax bayonette lens mount?

Your camera is cocked but since the shutter is not working you cannot release it and hence your film advance mechanism does not work. ME-super will work without batteries in full manual mode so set your shutter to B and try to release it. If the shutter will not release in B mode then the shutter/mirror box will need servicing : rubber components in the mirror box mechanism have perished and need replacing. After that your camera will be fine for another couple of years.

I put the film in the camera and the knob wont turn when i advance the film. I don't know what to do.

If the knob on the left hand side of the top plate (as viewed from behind) does not rotate when you operate the film advance lever, then the film has not been loaded properly and has failed to engage onto the take up spool. It's a very common fault and even experienced photographers sometimes make the same error. The frame counter will advance every time the lever is wound on, it only counts the number of full lever actuations, not the actual amount of film which has been wound on. The rewind crank is the only reliable way of knowing that the film is actually advancing.

Open the back of the camera and re-thread the film leader onto the take up spool. Close the back and wind one frame with the lever, and then open the back again to check that you got it right. This may potentially waste one shot but it will reassure you that you got it right. Once you're familiar with your camera you won't have to do this any more as you'll be able to feel and hear when the film is loaded properly or not.

My cameras advance lever will not spring back and allow the film to move to the next frame. How do i fix it?

push the film release on the bottom of the camera and try to continue forward then. If you are trying to get 27 pictures on a 24 exp. roll you may have advanced your film so far that it is stuck on the piece of tape that attaches the film to the spool. Take only 24 pictures.

Recently after putting the film in and taking pics I take it for developement and no pics come out Do you think the film is not advancing properly Maybe I didn't get the new film far enough on the spool to...

Probably.  Most cameras give you a mark to which you pul out the film leader.
If your cam is one of the power load/wind/rewind models then you must pull the leader right up to the mark
If is one of the older ones with an advance lever, then you can watch the rewind crank to see if it revolves when you wind on.  If it does not, then you have not engaged the film in the take-up spool properly.

Pentax me super camera, not working wind on lever

The clip spring broke jambing the advance gear. by forcing, the tab on the advance shaft broke.
take or send your camera to a camera repair shop for an estimate cost to repair.
there are no new parts for this model so the repairs could be expensive.
there should be no cost for an estimate.

My Mamiya RB67 triggers and shutter lease lever works but film advance lever doesn't move. Trigger button fired several times but film advance still showing 1.

This is not the best solution as it indicates a faulty film back. The film should advance without resorting to activating the film-wind release lever. That is only for intentionally advancing a partially exposed roll of film. Make sure the multi-exposure lever is not engaged and that the counter does advance and the red mark disappears as you advance to an unexposed frame.

Loading/ Unloading the Film

open the film door and charge the shutter. are the drive and take up sprockets turning? if they are then the film was not loaded properly. be sure to push enough film leader into the take up spool bars.
if the spools are not turning then a gear or spring ( advance lever return lock ) is broken.
there are no new parts for the ME Super however some camera repair shops have good used parts that can be used. get an estimate first.

35 mm, Minolta X700

Is the re-wind button stuck in? If so it can be released by moving the take-up sprocket manually. If that did not work there is a broken take up gear. This was a common problem with the X700, a white plastic gear was used at the bottom of the take up spool mechanism that just was not strong enough especially when trying to get just one more shot from the roll of film. No new parts are available.

My lomo will not advance the film after taking a shot

I fixed this a couple of ways with my own LCA.

One is to stick a piece of paper in between the 2 parts of the tape-up spool (the internal and external parts) to make them a tighter fit.

Also, I often fold the leader of the film back (very close to it's end), and push it inbetween the 2 parts of the take up spool, making sure one sprocket is securely placed into the small tooth/hook on the spool. So, the film is folded around the tooth and towards the back, on the inside of the spool.
