Error 321 'ethernet not connected' on LINKSYS WRT54GS

Hi, I wastrying to configure my new LINKSYS WRT54GS wireless router through the installation CD. I have connected the ethernet cable from mode to router's "internet" port..and then the blue ethernet cable (that comes along with router) from router's port 1 to my laptop's ethernet port. At step 5 during installaion, i get this error 321 saying ethernet not connected, even though the conecton was fine. There is nor problem with the ethernet adaptor of my laptop, as the internet works just fine if I conect it with modem directly wthout the router. I have tried all the standard troubleshooting techniques like restarting router after 60 secs and restarting the modem after 30 sconds..etc. When I connect the router, I was able to login to the SETUP page 192.168.1.1...I have enabled "mac cloning" under SETUP...the subnet mask was 255.255.255.0 and ip address 192.168.1.1. There was another field for DNS server.I tried giving 192.168.1.1 for DNS server but was rejected. How do I get this router working? What do I need to do? Can you let me know the reason for error 321 even as the ethernet is connected and working fine? Is manual configuration a solution? If so, ca you help me with what to fill out manually in the setup page? Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for your response. I tried all these standard troubleshooting techniques. Itz a brand new router and was configuring for the first time. So I have put in the installation CD and was follwing the steps. So yes, I have restarted (hard reset) the router, but of no use.I did that for the modem too. :( I have manually changed the settings in 192.168.1.1 site...internet type as PPPoE ...rovided the correct username and password of the ISP.

It sounds like you've done some configuration changes to your router that it may not have liked. Have you tried doing a hard reset to your router? Your Linksys router should have a small pin hole in the back of the router. While powered on, put in a very small nail or safety pink through this hole and hold it for over 5 secs. You should see all of the LED's on the front panel power on/off. Try resetting your wireless router and see if the error duplicates. Best of luck.

Dont go with the error , i came across such instances on a few occasions while users were installing it from CD . (Sounds lamme?right)
Try doing the set up manually , by accessing the web Gui of router .
***FOLLOW THIS********
The GS comes set to 192.168.1.1 as its factory default and with its built-in DHCP server enabled. So all you'll need to do is plug in a client that's set to obtain its IP address information automatically, maybe do a DHCP release / renew (or reboot your client computer), and enter the default password into the login box that pops up. If all goes well, you'll get the main Setup screen.
The Internet Configuration Type selector automatically refreshes the browser screen to present settings appropriate to the choices of Automatic Configuration - DHCP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and Heartbeat Signal (for Australian users) Internet connection types.
MAC address cloning gets its own page in the Setup section, as does setting up either dynamic DNS service from dynDNS.org or TZO, setting up static routes or disabling NAT features and converting the GS to a non-NAT router.
The interface is generally quick, with quick mini-reboots needed to get the changes you make on each page to take. Multiple admin logins are allowed, with no warning given when two or more admins log on. Once you're logged in, there's no idle timeout, and you just need to remember to quit your browser when you're done, because there's no logout button.
Enabling Remote Management for the first time still pops up a message telling you to change the router's default password and you can now enable secure (HTTPS) admin access. You can also change the default remote admin port from 8080, but can't restrict access by IP address or domain. Also of note is that you can't reboot the GS from the Admin interface.

Let me know if you require any more assistance.

Error 321 linksys WRT120N

Are you trying to run the CD that comes with the router ?
You get this error when your computer is not able to connect to the router.
Actually you can say that it is a bug in the CD.
Even if your computer is connected to the router, it will say that it is not connected.
You can set up the router manually without the CD.
make sure that your computer is connected to one of the Ethernet port on the router.
Reset the router for 30 seconds. wait for 1 minute.
unplug the power to the router and plug it back in.
Wait for a minute and try to set up the router manually.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

error 321 or 322shows that the cable is not connected to the router and the computer.
That is actually a bug in the CD. Even if the cable is connected it shows that it is not connected.
You can set up the router manually, without the CD.

When I try to connect my router to my laptop, the 321 error screen appears after about a minute. It says my ethernet cable is not plugged in properly, but it definitely is. Even the connection lights on...

This is a well documented problem with linksys routers. Go to google and type in "error 321 linksys". You will have to manually configure the router as stated on the linksys forum posts.

KEEP GETTING ERROR 321 WHEN SETTING UP LINKSYS WRT54GS ROUTER

Router setup
If you are using the cd that comes with the router, that is the problem. You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed. then:
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

It means you have to plug in your computer to the router through a ethernet cord. Most computers have one, and on the back of thats router has 4 ehternet female ports. Plug it in, and run it again.
