Re: Canon Gl2

Dirty video head! Playback newly opened blank tape for five minutes, after that eject, reinsert, playback then eject again five times, these will serve as your video head cleaner, never use "video head cleaning cassette tape" for it will only damage your camera. Most camera has built in video head cleaner installed inside and activates only when you insert, initial play/rec, and ejects a tape. If the problem is still there you need pro fix then.[:0)

Thick stripes on the recording on mini dv tapes

Stripes are either caused by -
Bad tape - try a new tape
Dirty tape head - can it be cleaned? Cotton wool bud and some metho?
Electronic fault.
Try a different tape first.
If that doesn't help, clean the head. Is it under warranty?

Lines on playback

You were practicing what consumer shoud do to clean video heads. If you were using the tape too many times, it may wear the head down quickly. First remedy would be let a professional technician clean the head for you to make sure it is not heavy clogging of the head. If that did not work, it requires tracking system adjusted and aligned before the video heads is replaced. I hope the cleaning by a technician takes care the problem. Good luck -James. Audio is cutting out on playback

You did every thing right. Audio is effected by clogged video heads and the audio circuit. At this time, you might look at the service by professionals. 50% chance the audio problem could be resolved by cleaning video heads and tape path without much adjustment, you cost would be around $100-150. If this does not resolve the issuie, Camcorder need repair and would run $250-400 for GL2 model. Good luck. -James. For further assistance by email, go to

My canon gl2 won't record because it keep telling me to eject the tape. I put in a new tape and the samething keeps on happening. What can I do about it?

You may be the victim of dirty clogged head. When the tape is incerted on GL2, it is searching for the data from the tape but if the heads are clogged it will not communicate so, the processing computer think the tape is damaged. Procedure to clean the head. This may not clean but let's try. Purchase a head cleaner tape and run it for about 10 seconds but not more. Try to insert regular clean tape and try it. If this does not resolve the problem, GL2 need cleaning and adjustment by technician. Good luck -James. For further assistance email, go to

Choppy recording and playback

If the heads become dirty, “NEED HEAD
CLEANING” appears during recording. During
playback, moreover, the following symptoms
≥Mosaic-like noise appears partially or the
sound is interrupted.
≥Black or blue mosaic-like horizontal stripes

When normal playback cannot be performed
even after the head cleaning
One possible cause is that normal recording
could not be performed because the heads were
dirty at the time of recording. Clean the heads,
and perform recording and playback again. If
normal playback can be performed, the heads are
clean. Before an important recording, be sure to
conduct a test recording to make sure that normal
recording can be performed.
≥If the heads become dirty soon after cleaning,
the problem may be the tape. If so, try another
≥During playback, the picture or sound may be
interrupted momentarily, but this is not a
malfunction of the Camcorder. (One possible
cause is that the playback is interrupted by dirt
or dust that momentarily adheres to the heads.)

Problems with playback of HI8 tapes...

What's happening is that the tape in the cassette is being chewed on one side by the camera's tape transporting mechanism during playback, hence the distorted image and sound. The mechanism might be damaged (misalignment) or just dirty. Try not to play other tapes on this unit because they will become permanently damaged. The best way is to find another camcorder (if cleaning does not help). Note that some old cassettes of long recording time will exhibit this behavior more often because of thinner tape used.
