Black Won't Print On MFC 420 CN

I had surgery and my Brother Printer stayed idle for almost a year. I changed cartridges today and cleaned 5 times, all colors work, but not black. Is there some other way to clean the print heads as I assume this is the problem.

I didn't have surgery and mine didn't sit for a year. It sat needing ink for a couple of weeks. Now ...same problem. Very faint print, I've cleaned and cleaned. It got better, but it still isn't right. Help! I've hardly used this thing in the year I've owned it! (but it has always worked well until about a month ago when I refilled the cartridges)

OK folks, here's a success story for a change. I have a MFC 420CN. I also refill my own ink cartridges. I previously had a similar printer stop printing black and cyan which left me with a useless printer. When my black stopped printing I thought here we go again...so I read a few posts and then tried something.

I went to Office Depot and bought a pack of Inkjet Printer/Fax Cleaner Sheets (Part # 470041) for $13.99. I bought a bottle of 70% Isopropyl alcohol ($2.50) and went to work.

First I put a cleaning sheet through the printer but it didn't seem to do much so I added a little extra alcohol to the sheet and ran it through a couple of times printing a page full of "B"s in bold font.

I then took an old black cartridge and an empty ink re-filling bottle (with the thin needle on the top) filled with isopropyl alcohol and then filled the cartridge with the alcohol.

I then ran 100 pages of printing the "B"s in bold font. After a while the printing came back and then got fainter and fainter. Finally, I put my old black ink cartridge back in the printer and printed 50 of the "B" pages.

My black is working fine again! Give it a shot for less than $20.00!

Good luck!

Use another new genuine (original brother) BK cart. Do the cleaning twice only for BK. Wait some time (4 hours). If the ink has dryed up, the cleaning ink will break up the dryed one. Do the cleaning again. If it doesnt work, please write again.

MFC 420 CN says blue is empty--cartridge brand new

Alright so here is the issue. When you installed the new cartridge it should have asked you if this was a new cartridge or used and to press 1 or 2 depending on your answer. This tells the printer to reset the levels. Try taking all the cartridges out and turning the printer off/on with them still removed . Then reinstall them one by one answering the used or new question when asked. Also to take into consideration is that print cartridges have a use by date. If it is not used by the recommended date then it may read as a used cartridge or not at all. Verify this date on the packaging if still available. All else fails buy another cartridge.

Ink well cleaners

There is a design reason why the print heads are changed when you change an ink cartridge is changed. The print head isn't made to be reused and the quality of your print will suffer at some point if you reuse the same print head 6 or 7 times. I would get new cartridges and be happy with the print quality that a new cartridges will bring.

I wouldn't be surprised. Since you're going to need black ink eventually anyway, put in a new black cartridge and find out.
