Question about Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Flatbed Scanner

1 Answer

4870 Photo Pro

When I scan a picture, it doesn't look like the original. It seems yellows and greens are missing. I am using professional mode and photo in the Epson software. Doesn't change when I scan directly into Photoshop ELements 3. I can upload a picture from my camera and have excellent results. The only thing I haven't done is replace the lamp assembly. Have had the scanner for three to four years. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Julie

Hi FYI, A lamp Circuit board and assembly would cost around 80% of the total cost of a brand new printer. Plus labor costs.

Hello Joseph,
Is it possible to print and scan your printer's built-in internal test card.
Then include a link to a good high resolution scan of the test card?
On the Rio, Rio 2, and Rio 2e, push the small button on the rear of the printer (with the lid closed, and dye film fitted). For the Rio Pro, on the front panel choose Menu -> Test Card - Yes (to confirm).
This will help identify the cause.
Exactly which model do you have? There were several Rio models. (the one in the picture is the original Rio). Later models were Rio 2, Rio 2e, and currently the Rio Pro.

Kind Regards,

When I try to scan one 4x5 positive sheet film it gives me 6 thumbnail pieces rather then one image?

Open Epson Scan and select Professional Mode. Turn off the Auto Thumbnail option which if it is not on the main page then check the small drop down menus next to the Scan/Preview options. Once that is off do a preview and the in the preview window manually draw a marquee around the area you need.

Using epson v500 and can't get it to change the document size under image type in professional mode according to manual. scanning old B&W negatives 2 x 2 in size and it cuts off the image most of the time...

I had the same problem and have found my answer. I don't know if it's the technically correct one but it works.
When you open the scan page and it shows you the mode, setting, original document type, destination, adjustments, and then the preview and scan buttons. Under the Preview button you will see a box check marked for thumbnail. Remove the check and then do a preview scan. You should end up with a complete scan showing the slide (if you only scanned one), the open side and the surrounding blackened area too. Click on the picture in the preview and then draw an outline around the part of the picture that you want to use. Do this just like it you were going to do cropping of the photo. Once you have the box around the part you want click on zoom. Your next preview will be the picture that you want. I haven't figured out how to remove the remaining blackened area with out going into a photo edit program but it must be able to be done. Then you can scan to where ever you save them to and have the whole slide. I hope that this gets you at least some what further along.

Are you using the epson scan software or something else? If you are using epsons software, it might be that the picture has verticl lines that the software is mistaking for different frames on your negative. Switch the software to professional mode. I go another step and use Vuescan, it's a better application in my opinion.

Color is all wrong

Your pictures are coming out with a blue tint. Remove the color catridge and look at the bottom of it. the Yellow is probably green. If it isn't, trying performing a printhead cleaning through your home center. After that, calibrate the printer, you may see that on the calibration sheet, that colors are missing. Scan the calibration page and then try your printing your pictures. If that doesn't work, contact kodak tech support, you need a new printhead.

Scanner won't scan full frame med format neg 2.25"x2.25"

ll you do is click on the arrow next to preview, and select normal instead of thumbnails. It took me a while to figure that out as well. Also, you will want to scan the film rightside up (opposite of what they say) and flip it in photoshop. When you scan it they way they say, the film touches the scanning bed, creating rings in your photos.
