When GPS is turned on unit locks up

I have a 3 year old unit that still has the original battery. Even though the battery shows a full charge when I flip up the build in GPS antenna or connect an external one the screen flashes on & off 13 times before unit locks up and then has to be reset before usable again.

Didi this happen even when you have a power source other than the battery?

I haven't noticed any screen flashing or flickering, but when I flip up the GPS antenna on my 3600, it finds the location and then within a second or two, locks up and requires a soft reset. I loaded R6 about a year or so ago to resolve what I remember to be a similar issue. Anybody have any ideas on where to go from here? Judging from their website, Garmin appears to have misplaced the meaning of Customer Service.

I don't think the software matters with this issue and here is why I think this...I have used battery power and my car adapter. My battery is in very good condition and will run for 30-45 minutes on the battery with the GPS on. The first thing I did was remove the SD card that has all of my maps installed. When I go to the map icon it shows on Long/Lats and no land masses at all. So the map function is working but there is no software maps running. My Ique 3600 will shut down right after it locks on to 3D. My GPS stayed in 2D GPS for about 30 seconds and it ran fine and showed me on the map with the Long/Lats. I have even tried letting the battery completely die so I lose all my addresses and then charge up the battery in hopes of "resetting" the GPS, no luck. My GPS will work fine with the antenna down and not using an external antenna, both where tried with the same results...locks up. I have no additional software loaded on my GPS other than the factory software. Is there anyone out there who owns one of these, had this issue, and fixed it???

I have a 3 year old iQue 3600 that just started freezing up shortly after it locks on to 3D. A soft reset will work but shortly after it locks on to 3D it freezes again. I had loaded Release 6 quite some time ago and decided to load it again this morning. That did not correct the problem. My unit has the original battery which still seems to function properly - however it is being powered by the cradle in my car when it freezes. I have not tried it running on battery only to see if the problem still exists (my guess is that it will still freeze). I also tried decreasing the map resolution but that did not make any difference.

I had losts of lock ups when flipping on the GPS - almost ready to get rid of the Garmin IQUE 3600 since it hasn't worked well for over a year. Sometimes it works a short time with the GPS; other times it was instant lock up when searching for satellites.

I took many steps to isolate the issue, and then added complexity to the equation: update to r6 (no change), hard reset, no user data on IQ3600 during testing, use only internal drive, only use basemap lite on internal drive, only use 1 local city on internal drive, load other maps on external card. Each time I went outside and flipped on the GPS to see if that was affecting the lock up.

Then I played with the GPS settings. The factor that seems to solve the issue: TURN OFF WAAS - it is intended to improve accuracy to 9 ft but it seems to have a bug.

To be precise, the setting is Home -> Que -> GPS -> Preferences (under QueGPS) -> WAAS Enabled: remove check from box to disable.

Oh, and one other thing: After unchecking the WAAS Enabled box, turn off your Garmin iQue 3600 and perform a soft reset by pushing the concealed RESET button on the back of the unit with the small reset pin found on the end of the black plastic cap of your iQue stylus after it is unscrewed.

Laptop works great on AC input, Battery charges and discharges per the indicators but will not power up on DC only. What needs replacing?

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

The gps automatically shuts off after few minutes

When you turn the unit on and get to the screen showing Where To?, View Map and Travel Kit look on the upper right hand corner of the display and make sure you see the battery icon all green. If it is not then the battery is not charged

Why does my garmin nuvi 205w keep shutting off?

The most common cause is low battery.(no voltage to the unit)
Does it shut off if plugged in and not moved?
If you have a old battery it may show a full charge while having only a surface charge and of course....will shut off.
Also if it is plugged in and the connection is moved causing a bad connection .....even for a second while having a bad battery in the unit ....it will ...of course ....shut off.

Yesterday, when driving, I noticed that the device said i was receiving no signal, even though I was out on the interstate... I got frustrated and turned it off... I figured that it would give it ample...

The green light does not necessarily mean there is power to the unit or charging the battery. If the unit is more than 3-5 years old, you may have success with replacing the battery. If you have a power source with sufficient current output capabilities then you could try that with the battery removed.

My unit just shuts off and will not turn on again until I plug it in as if to recharge the battery. I checked the battery when I first turned it on and it said the battery was fully charged.

Hi there!

It probably does need a battery replacement.

Even though it may show fully charged, and even test as fully charged, it may no longer have the capacity to deliver it for any sustained period.

If you think of a comparison between a 12V car battery, and a 12V alarm battery. Both show full charge, and the same output voltage, the difference is the available plate area. This is reduced due to degredation, and will no longer provide the same output.

Hope this helps.

If you want to make the battery last longer, charge for the recommended time (as was the first charge), then run the battery right down before charging.

If this solves the issue, Please rate as Fixya! thanks.

Suddenly turning off

Your battery is dead. You'll need to return it to Garmin for repairs. Mine did the exact same thing. Functioned fine in the cradle - showed full battery - but shut off immediately upon removal. They know about the problem and shipped me a new unit for free.
