Dell Vostro 1400 LCD Showing Black Screen

Hi...My Dell Vostro 1400 laptop is showing a black screen and nothing else. I connected the laptop to an external monitor via VGA and the display showed there. Also The FN Function button to brighten or darken the screen works.

I read online that there was an NVIDIA GPU defect for several Dell laptops and I believe this may be the case with my own.

Could anyone suggest how to fix this? I really would hate to have to get another laptop as this one is only about 1 year and a half old.

    Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 (1 yr 2 m old). Yesterday I was playing a PC game, and it froze!

When I turned the computer off and on again, the screen turned black. I can adjust the light on the screen (FN + up/down). Nothing else works.

I have tried to insert a AC adapter. It responds the same way...

Please, I am most grateful for any help! :D

    Regards, Julian.

I am also facing the problem. Sometime LCD goes off. But if connect the laptop with an external monitor it works. While connected with external monitor, LCD revives, and then works fine.

After working couple of hours, it freezes again. By the same way, (plugging to an external monitor) display can be regained. Very very strange problem!

Do anyone have any idea what's going on.?

If you connected the laptop to an external monitor via VGA and the display, then it is not "an NVIDIA GPU defect" .

The video chipset connected to the LCD screen is the same connected to the external VGA port, and is working fine since picture is OK on monitor.

More likely the problem is either LCD ribbon cable, or LCD display, the fact that the backlight is working means that the inverter is also working.

Whoever facing problem with Dell display, GPU stuffs and have already expired your warranty, you can ask dell representative to purchase an extended warranty. Under that warranty they replace the main board. It costs around $100.

I got the exsact same problem. thing is my lcd got damaged before. it had alot of green dots on some colors i had it replaced by dells warranty but now its over and this computer have to many issues with hardware. since the lcd is a replacement i dont believe its an issue on the lcd directly it barely have a year of use. i think it might be an electric issue cause it started when i had to buy a new battery charger cause last one got fried with a big electric lowe and high jump on my house. kinda like a lighting. so before i could charge it a while then disconnect it and it could work now it never turns on and it really gets me mad. if anyone gets it fixed please tell me

Dell laptop screen unreadable

Yes, it won't change anything because it's not a software problem. It has something to do between the connection of your LCD screen and your motherboard. Or your LCD backlight has a problem with it.

What you need to do is to open your computer and reset the connections inside. It should be the connection between your motherboard and the monitor.

I suggest you visit for more information on how to do that or if you want help then you can contact dell's tech support if you still have the phone support warranty.

I hope this helps!

My Dell vostro A860 Laptop shuts off after 5 seconds that I have turned it on, the blue light showing that is has turned. The screen is black, I don't even get the boot up screen.

Its stuck on finding a bootable device. your PC has a virus or HDD is gone bad (unlikely). Try putting in the OS disk n boot for it.

Enter to bios after powering and watch if it still go off. If not, go to Healt or sensors section and watch the temperature of CPU and system. The computer might turn off because of overheating.

Laptop monitor not working. But however if i connect to an external monitor i am able to see my windows

If the LCD is not physically broken then I would check the inverter for the lcd screen. The good news is the problem is in the screen area or the cable to the screen. The cable will need tested and then the inverter will need tested. Worst case scenario you will need to replace the screen. You also might want to check the presentation button that controls which monitor to use in multi monitor situations. One of the options is usually to black the lcd screen in favor of the external screen.

Dell Vostro 1400 LCD Showing Black Screen

If you can't see it with an external monitor - it generally means the system board needs replacement. I hope that you still have a Dell warranty. Good luck.
