How to make the taskbar reappear when it disappears in Windows

Sometimes on a computer running Windows, an application will crash or an unstable process will lock up the system, and out of nowhere the taskbar that runs across the bottom of the screen will disappear. The rest of the desktop and all of your icons will probably still be visible -- it's only the taskbar that is gone. Without the taskbar, you can't access the Start menu or view the open programs in your system notification tray.

To get your taskbar and Start menu back without shutting down your computer, hit <CTRL><ALT><Delete> and then (depending on the version of Windows that you are running) choose the appropriate option to open the Task Manager. (In Windows XP Professional, for example, there is a button labeled "Task Manager".) When the Task Manager window appears, select File from the menu bar and then from the drop down menu click on "New Task (Run)". Type "explorer.exe" into the text bar and hit <Enter>. Windows will sort of "reset" itself, and the taskbar and Start button will reappear. (This may take a minute.)

Whatever caused the system to become unstable in the first place could easily happen again, so at this point it's a good idea to save any unsaved data, close all open applications, and then shut down and reboot your computer. If the same problem happens again, make a note of which programs you were running when it occurred, as it may be a resource conflict or compatibility issue that's causing the problem.

OSD Locks Automatically

Power off your computer and then remove the monitor cable from the port on the back side of the computer case.

Reattach the cable and make sure the pins are correctly screwed in. Power the computer back on and check to see if the OSD lockout message is still being displayed.

Check the manual that came with your computer or monitor and locate the troubleshooting section if you are still receiving the OSD lockout message.
Find the OSD lockout heading and read the method that your particular model uses to remove the lockout.
Attempt generic lockout removal procedures if you no longer have the manual that came with your monitor.

Press and hold the "Menu" button located at the bottom of your monitor for 15 seconds and wait to see if the OSD lockout message disappears.

Press the "Menu" button again if the lockout message remains on the screen.
Use the arrow buttons to navigate through the main menu options.

Highlight the "Settings" or "OSD Menu" option and then hit the Menu key again to access the new list of settings.

Scroll down to the "OSD Lock" heading. Use the arrow keys to change the setting to "No." Hit the Menu key again to return to the main menu. Scroll to the "Exit" setting and then hit the Menu key a final time to exit the menu setting and remove the OSD lockout.

hope this helps

Computer says its locked; change users, but my mouse is locked up too.Im using my desk top to contact you.

You can use the windows key to open the start menu, then use your arrow keys to hightight turn off your computer, hit the enter key, use your arrow keys to highlight restart and hit your enter key This will restart your computer and hopefully, unlock your mouse.

Let me know if this solution works for you. If all else fails, it is acceptable to push the power button until the computer turns off, then hit it again the turn the computer back on. This is not the normally acceptable procedure for shutting windows down, but in this case, it can be done without any negative repercussions.

Reset the BIOS on a Compaq server 740 jumpers settings

Don,t do that insatead:
Entering the BIOS Setup menu Entering the BIOS Setup menu requires pressing a specific key at a specific time. If you fail to enter the Setup menu on your first try, repeat the following steps until you are successful:
  1. Close all applications that are currently running and restart the computer by clicking Start , Shut Down , Restart the Computer , and then OK .
  2. When the red Compaq logo or blue HP logo screen appears, press the F10 key on the keyboard to enter the Setup menu.

NOTE: An alternate to the above steps, especially if the logo screen disappears too quickly to enter BIOS, is to shut down (turn off) the computer. Wait 30 seconds, turn the power on and press F10 or F1 at the logo screen. Reloading the default settings Complete the following steps to reload the factory installed BIOS Setup settings:
  1. In the BIOS Setup utility, select the Exit tab.
  2. Select Load Setup Defaults .
  3. Select Save Changes and Exit (pressing F5 and the Enter key will also load the Setup Defaults).
  4. Press Esc and then Enter to exit Setup.

Send the monitor. It's a power supply problem. My 15.4" LCD has the problem, too, whenever I move the monitor down, it powers off, and the menu disappears as well, but I'm going to fix the screen.

Monitor blinks on then turns off after computer boots up

It could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. When the image "goes off" shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. Depending on the monitor this is usually and economically repairable problem.
