Question about Computers & Internet

Windows will not start up

I have a Toshiba Qosmio G40-12C laptop. Yesterday, after using the computer I went to shut it down. It said that it was loading seven new updates and to wait until that was finished - not to turn it off. Unfortunately,it remained stuck in the first update mode for over one hour - so in the end I turned it off manually. When I tried to restart it, I get a pane headed 'Windows error recovery', saying Windows has failed to start, due to perhaps a recent hardware or software change. It gives me two options: 1.'Launch startup repair (recommended)',or 2.'Start windows normally'. Naturally I chose the first option, but after saying "Windows is loading files', a 'Systems Recovery Options' flash comes up stating that 'The installed programme cannot start. Click okay to turn off the computer'. Next, I try the second option 'Start windows normally'. That brings up some blue writing that disappears so quickly I cannot read it. The computer then **** down and restarts by itself and I am back to square one with the two options. Can anyone help since I do not want to use the Windows recovery disk because I am sure I will lose all my work and programmes. Thanking someone in advance.

    Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I am in Advanced Boot options, which gives me different safe mode options, alone or with networking or with command prompt. I have not chosen one yet.

  • Jerry Haylins Apr 18, 2009

It went through a list of drivers - then the same blue writing as before came up, which is too fast to read and it shut down and restarted, like with the 'Start windows normally' I had earlier.

  • Jerry Haylins Apr 18, 2009

Can't find that one. I will list the others I have for advanced options for Vista:

    Enable boot logging

    Last known good configuration (advanced)

    Enable low-resolution video

    Directory services restore mode

    Debugging mode

    Disable Driver Signature Enforcement

    Start windows normally

That's them all. I have tried to read the quick pane. It says it has detected a problem and is shutting windows down. There are a series of numbers at the very bottom of the page under 'technical information', but it goes too fast to read them.

    Yes, it is Vista

  • Jerry Haylins Apr 18, 2009

I have a disc called 'Product recovery' - Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

  • Jerry Haylins Apr 18, 2009

Yes it is a recovery disc.It says on it to keep the F12 key pressed when installing the disc. I have done that, but even though I hear it start up, it then stops. The screen stays black with just the Qosmio logo and no instructions. Sounds like it has had it.

Have you tried pressing F8 as the computer is booting? Press it repeatidly as the computer starts. If the computer is not that far gone you should get a Multi-options menu-choose safe mode, then post back after you get into safemode. Post back if you cannot get onto safe modeand let me know the results

OK try- the same F8 procedure but select (I think it is called) selective start up, should give you a choice for each driver to load- as a yes or no selection, select no for each one. it MAY fail it may NOT but note which driver it fails on, if it fails

I think that may be a system restore disk. In which case you would loose all you data. But we will take it as far as we can without restoring. Insert the disk, reboot the computer. DO NOT select any options without posting what is indicatedm UNless you can determine your next key press will NOT start a system restore.

Qosmio f60 fan goes on high speed and freez. It keep freezing. The only way to reboot it is to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on.

I have the same "computer" qosmio f60. I've replaced the hard drive, installed a new window 7 OS, changed RAM paging, power options, run the things with a fan pointed at the computer fan.
The fan goes to high speed and the HDD LED unblinking. I've brought the laptop to two computer shops whose owners knew less about computers than I did. I tried to go to a Toshiba recommended shop in Toronto except they changed to Apple-service only. I tried phoning Toshiba, they just want to change 4 bucks a minute for technical assistance. I've had this Toshiba-thing going on 3 years with the troubles starting after the first year. No one cares about this problem. If I see a Toshiba factory I'm going to chuck this red brick of cra through the window.
BTW it's not a virus or rootkit. I had to learn how to partition a HDD sector through some crazy BIOS program before installing windows. There's no virus or rootkit that's causing this problem.
It's mostly been freezing on me with games.
