    if you cant run an antivirus, then you will most definatly have more problems than you realise.... windows XP really does ned antivirus and spybot or something.

    if there is no specific reason to use windows, i.e you use your PC to go on facebook and email etc then i would tel you to get ubuntu.....

    this is free and will do everything you will actually need it to do, and everything is free... the OS, the software everything.

    http://www.ubuntu.com/ take a look, i try and get as many in-experienced users as i can onto this, as windows, especially XP is not really best for home users that dont really even know how to use anti-virus etc.

    have a look at it, burn the image and install, or get the demo that runs on windows! if you can manage to download.... other than that it is really hard to work through a forum on a machine when you cant even get antivrus or have any and would really struggle to understand what some things could mean!

    i hope you understand, and if you can go ubuntu

Microsoft updates do not install

You have not said which OS you are using so; from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

When you try to install Windows updates from the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or by using Automatic Update, you receive a message that the update is not installed successfully. Additionally, the update is not displayed in the update history.

You may experience this issue in the following scenarios:

Scenario 1 You try to install updates after repair a Windows XP installation by using the Windows XP CD.
Scenario 2 You perform the following operations before you try to install Windows updates:

You perform a new installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
You visit the Windows Update Web site, or the Microsoft Update Web site.
Note When you visit the update Web site, the latest version of Windows Update software will be installed in your computer.
You install Windows XP Service Pack (SP3) without a restart.
You try to install Windows updates after the install of Windows XP SP3.

Then cause ;

This issue occurs because the Wups2.dll file that is included in the latest version of Windows Update is not installed correctly.

For scenario 1, the registry entries that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing after the repair install of Windows XP. The release version of Windows XP does not contain the Windows Update software.

For scenario 2, the registry entries that correspond to Windows Update are changed back to the Windows XP SP2 version if you did not restart the computer before you install Windows XP SP3. The registry entries for the Wups2.dll file are changed to pointing to the Wups.dll file that is included in the release version of Windows XP SP2.
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods;

Method 1: Download and install the Windows Update Agent,
For an x86-based computer; http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

For an x64-based computer http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

Method 2: Register the Wups2.dll file,

To have MS register the Wups2.dll file in Windows for you, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144#FixItForMeAlways.

a. Open the Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Tip

What to do when you can't play film or video.

Hi. Thanks for looking.
I have a friend who had this problem just few days ago.He inspired me to write this. What do I do when somebody just gave me film a DVD rip or Xvid some Dvix video in .avi format and it just won't play on my computer? This normally happens after you returned your PC to factory settings or formatted hard drive and got fresh operation system.You can probably hear sound but no picture at all.
  • This means that you are missing codecs on your machine. Codecs are simply talking little programs that tell players how to read video files. There will be different codecs for different operation systems.
So if you have that problem this tip is for you.

  • When using Windows XP please follow these steps:
  1. Go to this website---> http://www.xpcodecpack.com/download
  2. Click on the download link once your on the website and yourdownload should start immediately. Choose to open the file once you downloaded it.Your installation should only take a minute. Once you're finished with installation restart your computer and you should be good to watch your movie.

  • When using Windows Vista please follow these steps;
  1. Go to this website----> http://www.free-codecs.com/vista_codec_package_download.htm
  2. Click on the download link and choose to save file when prompted. Once download has finished go to folder where it's been saved and double click file to start installation. Once installed restart your computer. You should be good to watch your film once restarted.
  • When using Windows 7 follow these steps.list.gif
  1. Go to this website---> http://www.windows7codecs.com/
  2. Once on website click on download link on the left. Choose to save the file when prompted. Go to the folder where you file's been saved once download has finished. Lunch setup file. Once installation is finished restart your PC. You should be good to go when you start your machine again.
Thanks for reading. I hope this helped you if you had this problem. Feel free to ask questions on FixYa. We are here to help you.

In trying to attempt to tether my new BB to my acer a035H netbook, I managed to erase/delete my modem. I try to download new modem from acer and it's a zip file, I can open it but not run it...

Hi, Once you have downloaded the modem driver please right click on the downloaded file and then select extract all.Now open the file that you have extracted and then select the kind of Window(most probably would be Windows Xp or Windows7) then once you have opened the file locate a file named setup.exe(file type application).All that you need to do now is double click on this file and follow the instructions and you should have the modem driver installed.When the installation is complete please do restart the computer once. Thank you for your time and best wishes for your effort.

Hi - on log on my computer is unable to open my user account and opens a temporary account instead. It gives the message 'attempting to restore a file in the registry but the specified file is not in...

If you can access your computer with a temporary user account, you can simply replace the "hal.dll". You can find this file in all windows computers (win xp to win 7), simply copy the file from another computer save it on a flash drive and paste it in the folder C: > Windows > System 32 and paste it. The steps are as follows, open "My Computer", double click "C:" drive, again open "Windows" folder and then again open "System32" folder and paste the file there. Restart your computer and it'll work fine.

Or you can download the "hal.dll" file here.click here. (I've uploaded it for you). Open the link and click "Download Now", wait for 20 seconds and again click "Download File Now" link (purple link).

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Whenever i start to dowload any file from internet it restarts my Windows XP. Therefore i am never able to download anything. i am using ie6 and opera 9.6.

For starters, purge your browser cache and right click the IE icon and see if you can start it without add-ons...(I don't remember if that was available back then.) If so, I would update it to IE7 at the first opportunity, at least. If you go to windows update will it download and install your updates?
This behavior may be an indication of malware installed on your system...If you have access to another internet connected computer I recommend you go to www.malwarebytes.com and download and install their anti-malware software and run a quick scan of your system. Fix any problems it detects.
Also available is MS's troubleshooter for IE available by clicking here
Report back with your findings and we'll take it from there...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Problem in office 2007 setup

HI Deb,
You will need to update windows to service pack3 first. Then once completed click "start" and open "control panel" and then "Add Remove programs-software" Scroll through list of installed software and identify all and only the office related components "select" each component individually then click "remove/uninstall" Remove all previous installed office components, starting with the smallest sized file to the largest, once completed restart your machine and try the office install disk again. See below for service pack three download info and links:

Download the service pack manually You can use Windows Update or the Microsoft Download Center to obtain Windows XP SP3 online. Check for updates on Windows Update loadTOCNode(4, 'moreinformation'); To check for updates on Windows Update, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
  2. Click Express (Recommended).
  3. If your computer is up to date, Windows XP SP3 will be one of the updates that is automatically selected. Click Install. If your computer is not up to date, Windows Update will offer some other updates that you have to install first. Install those, and then repeat steps 1 and 2 to obtain Windows XP SP3.
  4. For Windows XP SP3, review and accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
Windows XP SP3 will be downloaded to your computer, and the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Setup Wizard will help you install it.
Download the latest Windows XP service pack from the Microsoft Download CenterIf you have problems obtaining the service pack from Windows Update, you can download the stand-alone update package from the Download Center. This page will say that this installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers. However, you can safely download this file. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Internet explorer stopped working

Do you get an error message which asks you send or dont send? if yes, delete all the temporary files by clicking on tools menu -> internet options -> general tab -> click delete button -> click delete all.
If there is no message before internet restarts, then uninstall internet explorer 7 from 'add/remove programs and try in ie6. if that does not work then remove ie6 from 'add/remove windows components' and restart computer then check internet explorer in 'add/remove windows components' and restart again. It should work.
