Tape deck motor won't spin reels. - Audio Players & Recorders

As far as I can see, the people responding to my problem, are dealing in obliquities.

To start, what I have is an open-reel tape deck, not a cassette player.

Second, I'm talking about the motor itself. I've taken the recorder apart and seen that the motor won't start when it is not connected to the rest of the power train, only the circuit board. When it receives power the motor won't spin unless I give it a manual start by hand and then it will run but without sufficient power to drive the reels .

It appear that the motor itself needs to be taken apart and repaired. (New brushes?) Or, the other possibility might be a problem with the circuit board. But the motor will continue to spin if I give it a manual start.

Either the motor has worn out or there is a problem with the control board. You can use an ohmeter to test the motor by placing a probe on the bottom of the motor where the solder is and see if there is a reading. If there is a reading, than the board is good and motor is bad

Is the motor a direct drive?
The tape reels may be belt driven - the motor may be OK but the belt/s may be stretched or broken.

Hi,

Have you tried placing a cassette inside of the deck and then trying the transport controls? A number of machines will not let any transport functions engage while there is no tape inside the unit. Also for a complete internal parts diagram and detailed troubleshooting please visit the bellow mentined link: http://books.google.com/books?id=a3CzoaCAFuUC&pg=PA187&lpg=PA187&dq=Tape+Decks+motor+not+spin&source=bl&ots=a18GEvQAYj&sig=ewRQgz0R1fRRrPfdi_qbIPZ3t6M&hl=en&ei=ByPuSa-hLpystgfeiIXSDw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3 Thanks Have a nice day.

Replaced belts on both drives but it still won't play or turn tape at all. Any ideas?

With the belts off, hit the rewind, forward and play switch. Check to see if the deck reels spin without the tension of the belt. If they do spin without the belt then you wll need to replace the motors. They are weak and dying. If not spinning at all with or without the belt then you need to check the motors independently to see that they work with a power source. If that is the case then you need to identify the wire or power board that is not sending power. Hope this helps.

    Teac a-3440 will not play

    Hi Gary,
This makes me think the Capstan Shaft is not turning either due to a broken or stretched belt or that the capstan motor itself has stopped working. This may be a job for a Technician. You first determine if the Capstan is turning or not- this is the metal post that contacts the Pinch Roller that rotates and is the way the deck gets it's speed regulation. If it is not turning look inside the deck from the side to see if the flywheel is turning and that the belt is on that flywheel. Lastly make sure the capstan motor is turning.
Beyond that a Tech may have to take over from there. I am in the Chicago area and can repair it if you are close. Many people send me units from all over the USA anyway.

The PLAY function of my Cassette desk doesn't work anymore

Well two things have to happen to make tape move in a cassette deck. One is the Capstan shaft has to rotate and that is usually a belt link to a motor through a pulley. The second thing is you must have take-up torque. If the tape moves but the take-up reel does not pull it onto the take-up reel then you either have a eaten tape or the deck will shut off. in your complaint it could be any of these items- maybe a bad Idler from the reel motor or the capstan belt is old and stretched.

I put a tape in and it keeps flipping sides without playing and pops out and says Error. It even does it with a CD-Cassette Adapter. Before the Cln came up and I pressed on the eject button and that...

Cassette decks have sensors on the reels which tells the deck when the tape is at the end. When the reel stops the deck switches the direction of the tape and sometimes the position of the head(depending on the deck design). Most common problem is the tape is hard to turn, or the deck won't turn it ( deck thinks it's at the end, click, still won't turn, click, won't turn, click) you should fast forward and/or rewind your tapes from start to finish once in a while to keep them lined up(narrow spool/less friction), you shouldn't have to but it works. BUT,...your problem sounds like a slipping or broken belt/or dirt causing the problem. Take the deck out to have a look and clean the capstans(rubber rollers)belts, heads with alcohol and a Q-tip while your at it. Dirt's usually the main culprit and if you do have some other problem, cleaning it is always a win/win (It will also sound better clean)

I have a single cassette deck Philips DC 900 when you hit the play button,it plays for about 5 seconds then stops and head retracts. Belts have been replaced

It's not seeing the takeup reel turning.
Either the takeup reel isn't turning or the takeup reel sensor has malfunctioned.
Check the belt to the takeup reel by doing a fast forward.
Will it fast forward? and is the takeup reel spinning during playback?

Tascam 644 When I press play it won''t stay on play, it stops. It will rewind and fast forward but that too stops by itself.

Scott has a point. You need to determine what is causing the unit to stop and it could be a bad cam motor belt if it has one or the lack of take-up die to the bad idler or even a dead spot on the reel motor. The reel motor will work normally at high speeds due to inertia but at low speeds as are used in play the dead spot of the motor can become much more apparent.

    Tape stuck in sony uvw-1800

02-874 error code signifies a defective takeup reel. The reel is not winding the tape in, so the deck won't go through the eject procedure. Check the connection to the takeup reel motor; if that's OK, the motor itself may be bad. Rarely, the takeup reel motor assembly will need to be replaced; usually it's a connection problem.

Repairing or replacing old tape decks

    Hi m522posner

There is a surprising interest in "vintage" hifi products these days. Your tape machines probably needs new belts. Check this site out. You can get spares for your tape machine here. Belt kits are $17. He does repairs also, but the transport to and from may be an issue for you. I suggest emailing Bob, he may be able to refer you to someone in CA > I could do the repairs, but I am in Australia. :)
