HP a220n (midtower PC) replacement

I'd like to replace the motherboard/CPU in my HP a1220n midtower PC with an AMD 64 X2 dual core processor. What motherboard would you suggest that will fit in this midtower case? I'd like to retain the front panel USB2 and firewire ports, etc., if possible, but this isn't really crucial. Thanks in advance, Duane

Duane , a good AMD 64 x2 Duel core processor motherboard would be the Asus M2A-VM AMD Socket AM2 MicroATX Motherboard / Audio / Video / DVI / PCI Express / Gigabit LAN / USB 2.0 / Serial ATA / RAID this motherboard will fit in your midtower. It comes with firewire and usb ports. hope this helps.

Here are the spec on your pc if the information you gave me is correct. You can only upgrade the cpu to the socket you have. I think you would be better off adding more RAM and a better video card that isn't onboard. Processor / Chipset
  • Type AMD Athlon X2 7450 / 2.4 GHz
  • Number of Cores Dual-Core
  • 64-bit Computing Yes
  • CPU Qty 1.0
  • Max CPU Qty 1.0
  • Chipset Type NVIDIA GeForce 8200

You could easily pick up an aftermarket USB PCI card, which will give you 2-4 USB ports that have their own logic chip. These are quite easy to install and very inexpensive.
Another option would be a front-mounted USB hub, which would attach to the USB header on your mainboard. They come in 3.5" size (to go in a floppy drive slot) or 5.25" for CD/DVD size slots.
Either of these should work fine as long as the rest of the PC is OK. If not, they are pretty much universal, so you could put in your next computer. (if it didn't work).
Good luck!

I have a dell desktop and am wanting to remove the old hard drive and install the AMD Phenom II X2 550 3.10 GHz Processor - Dual-core. I have never done anything like this before, and am wondering if this...

First of all you can't replace a hard drive with a CPU (AMD Phenom X2 is a processor), second your computer supports only socket 478 CPU's ( that means no AMD Phenom only older Intel Pentiu 4/Celeron CPUs. My recommendation is to replace the motherboard and CPU altogether. But since your knowledge is relatively low i think you should not do it by yourself.

It looks as though my resources were incorrect, as far as the two motherboards having the same processor socket.
(MSI RS480M uses a Socket 754)

What does concern me, is if the motherboard chipset used is the same. This was the stated information.

The motherboard chipset consists of the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.

Chip, and Chipset are slang terms for IC. Integrated Circuit.

Viewing this motherboard diagram may help explain how the motherboard chipset comes into play,

[You can also type, one at a time, Northbridge (computing), Southbridge (computing), Comparison of AMD chipsets, in the Wikipedia search bar, to gain more knowledge]

The Northbridge chip determines what Processors can be used.
It also controls high speed graphics technology.
AGP and PCI Express being high speed graphics, not PCI.

Determines what Ram Memory is used, and what Southbridge chip is compatible with it.

Let's go back to basics, and see what Northbridge chip is on your motherboard.
Two ways.
One, it looks as though you may be using a tiny program such as CPU-Z, or Belarc Advisor.

If not, I would advise downloading the free, tiny program CPU-Z from
Can you install the old processor, (AMD Athlon 2.25GHz), and get your computer to work, or are you using it now?

After you have CPU-Z running, left-click on the Mainboard tab, and tell me what it states for Chipset. Also tell me what it states for Southbridge.

Second way.
Physically look at the Northbridge, and Southbridge chip. IF, they are not covered with a heatsink.

The Northbridge chip is usually a large chip, and is located close to the processor socket.
Most configurations are like this; Processor socket at the top of the motherboard, ram memory slots to the right, Northbridge chip below the processor socket.

Motherboard designers put the Southbridge chip all over the place. There is no usual spot.

It is my belief at the moment, that your Northbridge chip will not support dual core processors, such as an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Only Single core processors.
Once I know what Northbridge chip you have, we can determine what your CPU support is.

What we really need to know is the socket type for the AMD. AMD makes sockets 939, AM, AM2, AM2+, AM3, etc. will be the best friend you could ask for. I highly suggest their expert forums and chats as well, they'll help if someone here doesn't. But either way still need to know what socket that amd is. 5200, or 4200 or something like that is also more descriptive, thats how they ID their products. Mine is an AMD phenom II 920. Good proc.
