2 slots does NOT mean Dual Channel, that just allows for 2 RAM chips

Under System Properties in Windows, How much RAM is indicated

  • Arthur Hoffmann
    Arthur Hoffmann Apr 18, 2009

Well depending on how old your board is it may NOT handle 2 gigs
Does your BIOS recognize the RAM? when it boots?

  • Arthur Hoffmann
    Arthur Hoffmann Apr 18, 2009

Well there may be a setting in the BIOS, (just to clarify) You put one Module in at a time and at booting the BIOS displays the correct amount of RAM for each single module?

Did you try putting ONLY one into the second slot, without one in the first? this only works on some boards (some require bank 0 to have a module) but see if that works.

I have some other ideas, depending on the result of the test

There are ONLY 2 solutions I can come up with, your RAM modules are NOT compatable with each other or you must tell the BIOS you have RAM in both SLOTS although you should NOT have to do that. Tell me the brand names and type and speed of each module. Also the Model or your MB You mentioned it was an ATI bonefish, but what is the model of the motherboard, it should be stamped on the board

let me research the info you provided, I will post my results (if any)

Well it will not be a case of a BIOS update but more so a change inside the existing BIOS, I have been using computers since windows 3.11, but actually only ran DOS programs, there was no internet and cell phones were a dream, I am not even sure there were many cordless house phone, but anyway, In all that time I have only upgraded the BIOS on 2 machines. It is not like a Software program upgrade, where the user sees or benefits from the New features. If it is working do not mess with it, the BIOS controls EVERYTHING including windows.

Well the RAM seems compatable, very few diferences between the two.... let me look into the MB, can you post your BIOS type and version.

Can you tell me which slots (color) you are putting the ram in?

  • Arthur Hoffmann
    Arthur Hoffmann Apr 18, 2009

OK, sorry was looking at the RS400, not the RC410

also here is something interesting about your board

    • Supports single channel 64-bit DDR II

    • Supports a maximum memory size of 2GB

when you boot the computer, press escape when it first come on and the splash screen will go away, you should see - a ver number and the name of the bios ie: Phenoix, AMI...

HI
I TOO HAVE THE SAME BOARD ON A SAHARA LAPTOP. IT HAS TWO SLOTS. I USE 1GB IN ONE AND 2GB IN THE OTHER. HOWEVER DESPITE INTERCHANGING THE MODULES IN EITHER SLOT BOTH THE BIOS AS WELL AS THE OS RESGISTER 2GB RAM ONLY.
CPU-Z SAYS SINGLE CHANNEL RAM. BUT SHOWS 3072MB SIZE!! I.E 3GB.
MAYBE THE BOARD SUPPORTS ONLY A MAX OF 2GB RAM.

In call of duty ghost do i need to buy 1 whole 8 gig of memory

You need to have 6 gigs of free dynamic ram.(Not including that used by the operating system and any other applications you have.

The way that memory is organised in a computer these days is usually in pairs or DRAM (dynamic random access memory) sticks which are matched. This allows the CPU to withdraw data from both memory sticks in the same clock cycle (DDR double data rate) which improves the over all speed of the processing.

So legal combinations over 4 gigs which will use the dual channel feature on your motherboard will probably be.

2 x 4 gigs sticks = 8 Gig DRAM
2 x 8 gig sticks = 16 Gig DRAM

Below is the minimum specification requirement.

Note: MINIMUM Faster CPU better graphics card and More ram is better.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHZ / AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4 GHZ or better CPU Speed: Info RAM: 6 GB OS: Windows 7 64-Bit / Windows 8 64-Bit Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 / ATI Radeon HD 5870 or better Sound Card: Yes Free Disk Space: 40 GB

MB keeps beeping 1 long beep no boot.

Hello try to download the manual:

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&s=4&m=CUSI-M&os=&hashedid=n/a

Select windows xp and open the manual folder
Click on global for download.
Unzip the file and you need adobe reader to read the content.

Here is a list of beep codes:

http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

This mainboard uses SD ram and it sounds like a ram problem.

If there is room for a ddr ram block you can`t use SD ram and DDR ram simultaneously.

Try to insert the old cpu again and upgrade the bios to support a bigger cpu. Not all cpu is supported.

Good luck

If you've got 4GB of RAM, then you'll only see something link 3200MB because some of the RAM may be shared/ dedicated for video OR most probably it is because 32 bit Windows Operating can't access 4GB Memory fully. (which 64Bit OS can access)
For further details about your CPU and Graphic processor, I suggest that you download two small free utilities

These usefull utilities will provide you all the additional details about the RAM chips installed, their bus speeds, memory available for operating system and dedicated for graphics etc.
Also, Check the memory bus speed, it should correspond to the FSB and the system should be running on 1:1 RAM to FSB Ratio (Or Higher) for optimum performance.
System performance may suffer due to RAM failure (which I have come accross a few times) Click HERE to view my tip about RAM Check. I have been working with the systems troubleshooting, upgrade etc for years n my rule is to go by the book n check every component in order to identify the issue.

Good Luck!
