Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate for PC

Open Question

Windows vista ultimate upgrade will not install. It goes through the whole program then states it is not able to complete and reinstalls vista premium. I have inactivated virus detection and rebooted. It copies the windows , gathers the files, expands the files, installs features and updates, completes upgrades then it states one or more could not be installed then it reinstalls the old program. after reinstalling the old program another popup appears stating to use the upgrade advisor--which I have. I purchased this product at staples and paid to have a technician install it. He gave up. He stated that everyone on line was having problems with this installation and it would not work. This is not acceptable. I am not that experienced in programming but I know at least you may have to trouble shoot . I am running the program again as we speak. At this momment it has made it farther than it has before. It states it is setting up the computer----completeing upgrade---the screen has gone black--returned to completing upgrade---the same message has appeared ''windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows, restart the computer and then restart the installation'' The computer I am trying to set this up is the desk top. I also have to laptops that use the same internet connection. On one laptop I am still working on installing the windows vista upgrade I purchased from microsoft I have been able to get everything installed except for 2 langueges. And I had help getting that far. As far as I can tell the only differences between the 2 is the outside appearance--the one I am asking help on comes in a black plastic container with upgrade printed under dvd in the upper left hand corner and the one I used on the dell inspiron 1720 laptop. Thank you for your help JuWan Marie Heil

I want window vista BUT I DONT KNOW HOW CAN I DO THIS

Hi there !

So tell me, what do you want to do with your computer? Do your computer crash and need to reinstall your Windows Vista operating system? Or you want to upgrade your operating system from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

For reinstalling Windows Vista, is it the same procedure when reinstalling Windows XP and Windows 7. Here is the link on how to reinstall operating system http://www.fixya.com/support/r7410371-reinstall_windows_xp_or_installing_clean. For Windows Vista, here is the procedure on how to reinstall Windows Vista.

1. Just put the installer CD into the CDROM Drive and open your computer
.
2. If message appear to press any key to boot from CD. Press any key to go to Windows Set up.

3. From there, just follow the installation procedure and put CD key if prompted and it will install itself the whole process. It will reboot for 3 times and don't press anykey when this happen. it will be finished within 20 mins.

For upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista, remember that all your files and softwares will be remove except for the hardware drivers. But not all the hardware drivers will be 100% working because upgrading the operating system will make your drivers outdated or not compatible with Windows Vista. If some drivers not working, just install the hardware drivers compatible with Windows Vista.

Here is the procedure.

1. Do not put the Windows Vista installer CD yet into the CDROM drive.

2. Open your computer and let it run to Windows XP program until is is finished to load your Windows settings.

3. Now insert your Windows Vista installer CD to the CDROM drive, it will pop up the upgrade installation wizard and just choose the upgrade installation. It will run the upgrading installation and just follow the instruction and it will be finish with 20 mins.

I hope this will help you and thank you for using FixYa !

Tip

Windows Installation Disc VS Windows Upgrade Disc -NOT THE SAME-

Having Trouble Booting To Your Windows Upgrade Disc?

...Upgrade discs aren't bootable discs. To repair a windows installation, you must use either a system repair disc or, better yet, a windows installation disc (genuine Retail/OEM discs are pretty much your only option to completely reinstall your windows operating system, unless you own a previous full installation disc of a previously released Windows version (such as XP or Vista), in which case you could install that windows operating system and then upgrade to a newer windows OS like windows 7. however if you ever need to reinstall windows 7, you would either need to reinstall the older windows OS, then upgrade to the newer one.

If that isn't clear, I'll sum it up....

Let's say you bought a computer, that computer had windows xp home edition. Maybe you wanted to upgrade from Windows XP/Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Well in order to switch from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7, (or even from Windows 7 home premium- to windows7 Pro or Ultimate), then you must either:
A) Buy an upgrade disc and upgrade to the newer desired version.
B) Or, Buy a Retail Copy of the version you want to install. (keep in mind that a retail Windows 7 disc can be used to perform an upgrade rather than to competely wipe the hard disc and perform a clean install (delete partitions, reformat, and perform a new windows installation), if you so choose.

The bottom line is, you cannot Install a fresh clean copy of windows using an upgrade disc. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Retail Windows Operation System Installation Setup Discs are "Bootable Discs". Windows Upgrade Discs are NOT bootable. (unless one where to "modify that particular disc, which is not legal).

In regards to upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the thing to look at is how long were you running Windows Vista before you did the upgrade.

Normally you would need to reinstall a few driver just because Windows 7 has a different kernel then Vista does but alot of times you are reinstalling the same drivers.

Normally when you are having the problems that you are having this is a sign that you had some problems in Windows before doing the upgrade. This is why in general when doing an upgrade it is good idea to do a full reinstall of the OS with your upgrade. Note with manfactured computers like your notebook what you should do is back your data then do a factory restore of your Windows Vista. After the restore you will have a clean base to do your upgrade on so Windows 7 should run fine.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

Downgrading from windows 7 beta to windows vista

Did you happen to make a recovery point? Vista is pretty good about this. Restart your system and push f8 until you get to the recovery and troubleshooting. Then just use recovery console and restore it to a previous point. If you cant do this you might need to do a fresh install of vista.

Your missing the files that load the operating system. Put the vista disk back in, let it run and it will eventually ask if you want to setup or repair. Choose repair and then type "fixboot". That will fix your master boot record so the operating system can load.

Upgrade to vista ultimate

If you have a full version of Windows Vista Ultimate, you can just insert the DVD when you logged in your laptop and go to Computer(My Computer) and lauch the installer for Windows on DVD icon (Double Click DVD icon). It will give you the main window for installing Windows and along the way, you should find an Upgrade option. Click that one and it will install windows Ultimate on your system. It Will not format the laptop but installer will just add system files and features to the laptop to run Vista Ultimate.

**If you haven't purhcase a Windows Vista Ultimate Disc, check this link to to purchase just an upgrade Disc (only) of Vista Ultimate.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/anytime-upgrade-overview.aspx

An upgrade disc will also not format the laptop instead it will just install additional features and add additional files on the system to run Windows Vista Ultimate
