Okay, I just got mine to power back on with a working screen. I have been powering it off and on for a while this morning several times. And I just held down the power button for a few seconds until it powered off, then I powered it back on, and the screen started to work. My comp has been doing this for the past 3 days. I have no idea what I do, but I just kept on powering off and on. Make sure to hold it down for at least 5 seconds. Sorry can't tell you exactly why and how this is happening. Dell just sent us broken down laptops, as always. This is my second laptop from them, I have an Inspiron 6000 and this Vostro. Both have been big problems. Good luck.

A blank screen with evidence that the motherboard is working (the Capital "A" green light is probably the CAPS LOCK on your computer's keyboard) initially points to an output or video problem. One quick way to see if that is the case is if you connect the computer to an alternate screen. Do so with the "sick" computer powered off at first. After being sure the connections are snug, be sure that the test monitor is powered on and then turn on your "sick" Dell. If the test monitor runs as your laptop's monitor ran when it was healthy then you know there is a cabling/backlight/inverter/screen problem. Some of these can be solved very easily, some more expensively as replacement may be required.

On some laptops pressing down firmly on the keyboard may seat a screen cable to motherboard connection. That often works on IBM Thinkpads with screens that fade in and out due to a poorly seated screen cable connection to the motherboard.

So let's see how the test to a known working screen goes.

I updated the bios on the dell vostro 1000 and it wouldn't start. The power light stays on and you can hear the fan. This is followed by a long beep and 2 short beeps while the screen stays black.

Hi alkeith...
Turn on the computer while tapping F8, this will take you into the Safe Mode.
While your in the Safe Mode you can do a system restore.
Restore your computer back to an earlier time when it was working before you installed the bios change.
Left click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
This should solve your problem.

My dell vostro 1000 laptop's display ain

if i read this right, when you power up the laptop you get fan spin but no display ?, if you just get fan spin and the green power light and nothing else the you have a motherboard failure, if you get LED activity and it seems to be working but you only have no display the its more likely LCD failure, if you DO get activity try this : power off the system, press power button while holding down the D key, this will run the LCD BIST SELF TEST which will run through full colour screens if fails this test you will et a beep code, please bear in mind you will only be able to run that test if you get LED activity, if you dont have activity then the motherboard needs replacing

remove the memory cards and wipe the golden ends with an erraser and than put them back in and issue will be resolved ... if that doesnt help... if there are more than one card than remove them again and reseat one card at a time and you will find the culprit and you have to change it and in case of one card you have to change that

Update Dell Vostro 1000 BIOS now wont turn on, nothing on display

You may be in for some trouble, a failed bios update isn't always an easy fix. if you can find the cmos battery try to remove that for a few seconds. you will also need a disk version of the bios, download that from dell on another computer and copy it to floppy or cd and see if you can boot to that and reinstall the bios.

when you press the power button what happens, does it light up and run the fan? Nothing appears on the screen?
