Question about KitchenAid KHMS155LSS 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave came on by itself

My Kitchenaid KHMS155LSS came on one morning by itself and I could not get it to shut off. I finally unplugged it. After a few minutes I plugged it back in and it acted strange and the controls did not work. The fan nor lights would respond and the display said "PAN...." as it turned on for 3 minutes again. I could not cancel. I unplugged it. The repairman came two days later and I plugged it back in and of course it was working fine and responding to all touch commands. The last three days it has worked perfectly. The repair thought that maybe we needed to replace the Touch control panel. He had to order the part and will come back to install it in two weeks. This is a $278 repair on a unit that is less than 18 months old. Just an oddity or a power surge maybe? Your advice is welcome. Thanks,

If the logic IC was fried why would it be working perfectly now???? They don't "Un Fry" themselves do they?

Same problem. Ghost in the machine. Comes on automatically. We've had the unit for under 2 years.

I have the exact same problem, but haven't called for a repair yet. I unplugged the microwave, reset the clock and though all was fine until it turned itself on and did the poltergeist thing again.

Same issue, turns itself on for 3 minutes to PAN setting. Has anyone contacted KitchenAid? If they are all coming on to the PAN setting, it seems like a common defect and something KitchenAid should cover?

Yes this is usually caused by the touch assy, but $278 !!!!! Thats kinda steep considering the panel assy is only around 30-60 bucks!!! It will need the touch assy and even possibly the control board, because sometimes the logic IC gets fried and causes "ghost issues" as well.

Its possible its not totally fried but got a jolt from somewhere and causes internal problems in the Ic like ghost button pushing.

Microwave model KHMS155LSS-3 turns self on

I had the same problem with the same model of KitchenAid Microwave. KitchenAid customer service will act like they never heard of the problem, although if you google it, you will find that this is a very common problem. Ask to be transferred to the safety department. After more than 6 months of complaining and several repair attempts (they replaced control panel and switches), KitchenAid finally gave me a full refund. This is a serious safety defect for which they have no fix. The product needs to be recalled, and I am willing to testify that KitchenAid was criminally negligent when this product finally causes a house fire and possibly serious injury or death.

Microwave is beeping, lock comes on, F2, just keeps beeping by itself

F2 on a KitchenAid mike usually means a Keypad short. Beware if it is a KHMS155LSS, it can self start on its own with a KeyPad short. A real stunning defect.

Microwave is turning itself on

First, do not leave this machine plugged in until it is serviced. If this is a KHMS155LSS, there is a very high probability that you have a keypad short. This defect can cause the machine to start on its own at ANYTIME, at night, while you are away, at work etc. Contact Whirlpool Customer Service and ask for Safety Dept immediately. They will most likely send A&E out to fix it. Although it will fix the problem, if the keypad fails again, the self start logic defect is still present. You should be under warranty if it is above model. I almost had a fire this past Monday, Labor Day, 9/7/09 when my machine self started at 3 AM with a package of bacon left in to thaw for the morning. What a somey mess. Chinese made garbage.

First, do not leave this machine plugged in until it is serviced. If this is a KHMS155LSS, there is a very high probability that you have a keypad short. This defect can cause the machine to start on its own at ANYTIME; while you are on vacation or at work or at night while you are sleeping etc. Contact Whirlpool Customer Service and ask for Safety Dept immediately. They will most likely send A&E (Sears) out to fix it. Although they will fix the problem, if the keypad fails again, the underlying logic self start defect is still present. You should be under warranty if it is above model. Please be polite, insistent, but polite. With KitchenAid's pathetic quality in recent years, their customer service reps get more then an earful. Also, please go to the Consumer Product Safety Commision website at www.cpsc.gov and post a Report Unsafe Products report. This will help get this model recalled before someone loses their home or life. I almost had a fire this past Monday, Labor Day, 9/7/09 when my machine self started at 3 AM with a package of bacon left in it to thaw at room temp for the morning. What a smokey mess. Chinese made garbage. Shame on Whirlpool. Long live Hobart!, please buy back KitchenAid and bring back the lost quality.
