Go to Control panel > Add Remove programs (locate the audio driver installation) > click Uninstall (Remove).
The presently installed audio driver will be removed from the system.
Reboot the System
Right-Click 'My Computer' icon.
Click 'Properties'.

That's all. The audio driver will be re-installed. If you have the Driver CD of the audio card, just put it into CD driver, before doing this. If you have internet connection, connect it too. If so, the system will audo-search for the audio device, and will install it automatically either from the O/S, CD Rom or by internet. If this driver package is not right

Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours

http://download.cnet.com/SlimDrivers-Free/3000-18513_4-75279940.html
Windows XP/Vista/7/8

it might take some time being a freeware driver solution
Note: it will find all of your outdated drivers

This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.

Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.
also at cnet
http://download.cnet.com/2000-20_4.html
on the home page you should see a search tab just type in what you are looking for

IE: Motherboard name sound drivers.

Place a tick in either windows software or all software box.

You might have to try a few times to get it right.

Audio problem

Hi,

Open device manager by right clicking on My Computer and check if the audio driver is working properly. Right click on audio driver - Properties - under general tab you will find a option " Device usage " - check whether it is " Use this device (enable) - selected. Go to Driver tab and click on update driver option. Check cables and speaker's connection. Open Control Panel - Sound and Audio Devices, here check for the options if they are muted.
If you still have the problem, then probably the audio port of the Motherboard is faulty, you may need to change it.

Peripharel unplugged. realtek audio sound does not work.

Sound like you do not have the right audio driver installed.
Also check if the Windows audio service is running in the service manager.
If you need to find the right audio driver, you can try an automatic driver finder program.

IBM x41 1866-9GU does not have an audio device (sound card) installed. I need to find the right one that will work with this laptop and get it ordered and delivered. Do you know which model I need?

Are you certain it is not just a driver issue? If the right audio driver is not installed, the errors will also indicate that there is "no audio device installed".

More info here: http://www.pcauthorities.com/pc-errors/no-audio-device-in-windows

If you have the original CD< you can look for the audio drivers there. If not, check the IBM support website, or use a driver finder program to auto-detect and download the right driver.
