I'm really a novice, so you need to explain things to me like I'm a first grader. An ohm Meter - can I get one from Lowe's? If the heating element is bad, what needs to be done to replace it?

Yes an ohm meter also referred to as a Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) is for checking voltages - ac/dc, continuity, and resistance (ohms)
Be sure to get one that measures resistance AND continuity... you will need it to test the coil and troubleshoot the power coming into the dryer.
Lowes, Ace, Home Depot, ACO, Sears - anywhere you can buy a tool will sell a DMM.
Not all are equal - if you need to - ask for help to make sure you get one that measures resistance in OHMs

Usually when that happens the problem is the high limit sensor... not the element. If the element is bad it will usually have discoloration.

Your problem most likely lies with the thermostat/thermastor.
SEE THIS PAGE for a better explanation of how a thermostat works.

CLICK HERE for a parts blowup of your dryer top and console
CLICK HERE for a parts blowup of your dryer cabinet
CLICK HERE for a parts blowup of your dryer bulkhead (where you will be concerned)

You will find the Thermostat #42 on the last link above and HERE
And the Thermal Cutoff #47 in the same diagram and HERE
Thermal Fuses #59 in the same diagram and HERE
And finally...
the element as # 14 and HERE

Troubleshoot in this order - as they become more expensive as you go down the list :D

Kenmore front load dryer won't heat and timer broken

The most likely cause is the timer is bad. It turns on and off things as it cyles through and the first step is to get the tub turning before it turns on the heat.

Kenmore Elite HE# electric dryer mod # 110.82822103 - Dryer turns on, but no heat and clothes unable to dry at all. It's like fluffing them with cold air blowing on them. :(

Often a dryer heating element burns out, but doesn't trip the circuit breaker or blow a fuse. The heating element is simply a long coil of special wire. You can check it for continuity with an ohm meter. No continuity means the element is bad and you need to replace it--electric heating elements aren't repairable. On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse--which is about an inch long--is usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing. If the fuse has blown, you need to replace it. (You can't re-set it.)Here is a link to a video that will walk you thru the process. Here is a link to any of the parts you may need to fix it.I hope this helps you,Rick

Dryer will run for a second and sound three beeps and stops.

Sounds like the door switch has gone bad., but your description is confusing.

First, it takes a few minutes for you to feel the air blowing hot, particularly when the dryer is in a cold garage. The heating elements have to heat up the mass of the metal, and any clothes in the dryer.

The timer design is such that it can not speed up (the motor inside wont start running faster, due to it's electrical design.).

I am suspect that the door switch has failed for some reason, because reading between the lines, I think you are saying when you release the Start button, the dryer quits operating. If the door switch is bad, then it will cause that condition to happen.
