Ptouch 1100QL waste of tape issue

Every time I print a label, it waste about an inch before the actual letter comes out. Is there a setting that can be adjusted to get rid of this waste of tape?

TIA

It isn't actually "before the actual letter comes out," as you said, but rather after. You have probably noticed that you must do a "feed" first or the cut won't clear the end of the label and you have to do it again. This just reflects the distance between the print head and the cutting bar.
There's no way to avoid this if you must have the one label you just printed right away and you don't have any more labels to make at the moment.
However, if you have several labels to make, you can economize by printing them one right after the other (without any "feeds" or cuts), then once you're all done, do a "feed" and cut. The labels will be close together, with little waste except at the ends, and you can cut them apart with a scissors.

If you have extra space on both side you are probably set to 'mm' = middle. If you power off and then hold shift-R-power and let go you will see "English" pop up. Press 'OK" if this is the language you want.

You will then see either "inch" or "mm" appear. This is the stickler; you eithr can chose 'mm' which puts space on either side of the label or 'inch' which has a leading inch of tape. Either way you have waste (by greedy design). As they say, printing labels together and adding a space for cutting will help avoid the waste. Hope this helps.

PT 1280 suddently printing miniscule letters. Can't reset, have turned off using Shift/clear buttons, but doesn't change after settings redone.

What size tape are you using? If you have switched from half-inch to quarter-inch tape, then chances are that the printer is working correctly as the general size of the print is determined by the size of the tape. Beyond that, you can use the Text button at the top-center of the keyboard to enter the options for customizing the print such as the font used, the size (small, medium, or large), the width of the letters, and the style (such as bold, outlined, or shaded).

My ptouch isn't printing; after creating a label, when i press print, the tape comes out but nothing is on it.

Try a different tape. Usually, when the ink and label get screwed up it's time to trash it and start over, but you might just inspect the cartridge to make sure they are joining properly. If another tape works, there's your answer. If not, well 1180's aren't very expensive and our Brother store (Staples) has a sale on them every other week. Another heads up. If you have a Meijer's store nearby, they are stupid. They're selling black on white 12mm TZ tapes for $9.99. Go and buy them all :-)

When I print a label, there is a blank white space before and after the printed text. How do I reduce the amount of tape printed before and after the text so as to maximize the label tape available?

you can, change the margins to narrow. you'll decrease the right margin but not the left margin which accdg to my research, is the space needed for the ptouch to print.

1. Replace the batteries (use only alcalines)
2. See if the tape is correctly inserted.

S4M automatically feeds extra labels everytime it's turned on

Set your print driver to "Do Nothing" on Head Close and Power Up. the next time you print will pass this information to the printer and the problem will not come back - actually the default for the driver is "Do Nothing" so it has probably been changed for some reason, you will need to change it back.

Printed Tape Cuts Off Letters

I was having the ame issue. Found the solution on the user manual (posted online). Press Function, scroll to "Margin", press "Function", use arrows to select "#" or "##", then press Function again. Now it should print with a margin, thus not cutting off your letters. Mine was set to "-", which is basically no margin.
