Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1110NX PC Desktop

Only 128MB or 256MB detected Compaq 12XL400 laptop; 3 diff sticks

Compaq Presario 1200 Series (12XL400) laptop has one expansion port with 256MB maximum. I've tried 3 different SODIMM sticks. All result in only detecting 128MB of the 256MB. All websites that I've found indicate that this unit will handle 320MB max (64MB onboard + 256MB expansion). Using PC133 CL3 256MB sticks. BIOS upgraded to the latest version with no benefit. Shared video memory in 2, 4 or 8MB via BIOS. Used SimmTester to check memory, it too also detects only 128MB. Bad motherboard? Can anyone confirm that this laptop will handle 256MB in the expansion slot?

I have not tried PC100 because I don't have any in stock and all of the
resellers on the web are selling PC133 so it shoud 'downshift' without issues.
The computer is showing a total of 188MB installed (64MB onboard slot 0 - 4MB
    shared video memory + 256MB slot 1 - 128MB slot 1 'missing'. I've tried 3
differenct 256MB PC133 in slot 1 all with the same result.

I don't know if the computer has a usb port

If it's a Presaio 1200 series as you say in the topic title, then you're in bad luck.

That's a really old laptop and does NOT come with usb support.

Regards.

Can I install windows xp os to windows me? Both are compaq presario version.

It depends on the system specs.
The system ram is the most important, your laptop came with 64mb ram, you need a minimum of 128mb, but 256mb should be the absolute min with XP, here are the minimum specs from microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sysreqs/pro.mspx

Memory problem

Hi

Compaq Presario 700z notebook PC supports 128MB, 192MB, 256MB, 384MB PC 133 SyncDRAM (SDRAM). The Max Capacity is 384MB.

On this basis, I agree to upgrade the BIOS to support a 133Mhz (PC 133) memory module (DIMM).

At current DIMM capacity and prices, ensure the total memory capacity does no exceed 384MB. On the same note, a 512MB DIMM or two 256MB DIMMs are not supported. The best combination to achieve 384MB will be one 128MB and one 256MB DIMMs.
