I am not aware of any laptop which outputs standard or s video without an adapter. You need to get a VGA to video converter. This is the worse image quality that you will get from your laptop. Does your TV have HDMI. or DVI-D. If so get an adapter that goes from VGA to one of those. If you don't have either of those conectors how about component.
If you are using a mac laptop that is a different adapter. Mini DVI to whatever your TV's best input would be
Good luck

How to connect pc to tv

I’m writing this post on how to connect your PC or computer to a TV because last week I returned from a trip in India and wanted to show all of my pictures and videos to my family from my laptop onto our HDTV, but unfortunately I did not have the correct cords and so after fumbling around for 30 minutes trying to connect my computer to the TV, I had to tell everyone that they would have to wait till the next weekend! Pretty annoying considering the times we live in, it should be quite easy to connect the two together!
So here’s a quick walk-through of all the methods that I know (if you know any more, please comment) to connect a laptop or PC to your TV:

1. S-Video – This is probably the most common method out there currently because an S-Video cable is cheap as heck and just about every TV under the sun has a S-Video port. You’ll have to make sure you laptop is equipped with this port. Remember, there are two types of S-Video cables: 4-pin and 7-pin. Most laptops and PC’s are equipped with a 7-pin port, so if your TV only has a 4-pin S-Video port, then this method will not work.
2. VGA – If you have a HDTV, then you will be better off connecting using a VGA cable. It gives much better quality than S-Video and as with S-Video, the cable is very cheap. You usually won’t find a VGA port on regular TV’s though, so this option is if you have an HDTV.
3. DVI - DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface with “digital” being the key word there. The digital signal will give a higher quality picture than either S-Video or VGA. Of course, your computer will need to have a DVI connection and your TV will need to be an HDTV. This cord is definitely not cheap, it ranges anywhere from $40 to $80.
4. HDMI – Using HDMI will give you the best quality by far. No computers that I know of yet have HDMI ports, but you can get a DVI to HDMI cable to connect it to your HDTV. HDMI is compatible with DVI.
5. Scan Converter Box – This is the last method that I could think of and it involves using a scan converter box, which takes a VGA signal and converts it into S-Video or component video.

How do you get laptop screen to show on the tv by a hdmi cord

Connect the HDMI cord to both. Switch to the HDMI input on the TV. Boot the laptop. If you're using Windows and the TV doesn't show the laptop's screen, right click anywhere on the desktop that doesn't have an icon, then select properties. In the tab to the right of the resulting window, you should be able to enable screen mirroring, expansion, or switching.

Some laptops also have a function key set that you press to switch monitor outputs. Look for keys with secondary, alternate color commands on them. It will normally take a set of key presses.

I am trying to hook up my lap top to my xbox 360 i have a regular phone cord all plugged in and its not showing up anywhere

I think I know your problem, there are two types of "phone" cord one is a square plug called a RJ-11, and a Ethernet cord or "bigger phone cord" is more rectangular in size and is called a RJ-45

Here's a comparison1ed8810.gif

The xbox 360 takes the RJ-45 cable, now if you have the right cable, connect one end into the 360 and the other in the laptop. Turn on the xbox and the laptop. Now (depending on which OS) find the network connections under the control panel and make sure the connection is good. Then if your going to use your laptop as a wireless adapter all you have to do is select both the wireless and wired connections, right click and find bridge connections. Networking gets very complicated, trust me I've spent hours trying to figure something out. I did the easiest way possible. If my explanation isn't good enough I have some sites that might help but are more technical and require more knowledge of networking, but possible to do.

Site 1
Site 2 (the better one of the two)

If your still having trouble, go to xbox.com and look in the support section. Or if your really having problems call Microsoft at 1-800-4MYXBOX.

I hope you get your xbox connected with your PC, and it's so worth it when you get it hooked up. Good Luck!

My girlfriends computer did this a lot. What we did and I don't know if it would work for you was to use the HDMI cord (obviously your laptop has to have an HDMI). The S-Video cord was very tricky to keep it from going black we had to mess with the cord a lot!

Where does the error show up? on your TV or laptop? I hooked up my laptop with a DVI connection to the TV. I had to use the TV remote and select the right input from the laptop.

Steps to set up VGA

Well you can't. You can, however use the S-video to S-video connections or S-video to composite (RCA jacks) connectors and bingo! Knowing what laptop you have would have made my answer more direct as a 20 year old 50lb laptop might have a connector of a different kind like a VGA 15 pin connector with a bunch of DIP switches that will work for an Apple or a PC but my crystal ball shows a modern laptop with an S-video output connector. ~Steve
