CPU speed dropped after installing RAM

I installed more RAM on a IBM Lenovo T60. I was currently had 1GB and installed an additional 2GB for a total of 3GB. When I go to 'my computer' and 'properties' I noticed that my cpu GHz dropped on my cpu speed. I can't remember what it was orginally, but I could have sworn it was > 1GHz and now it's like 900 MHz. Could something have changed withint he bios? Or why would this happen? I'm also trying to find out what I can change it back to and how. My cpu is an Intel Centrino Duo.

Thanks for your help!

Ok. Fear not. You CPU is running at its native speed, it is the fault of Windows reporting the actual CPU speed. If you stop in the BIOS, the real speed will be reported there, the same if you run Linux.

Hi,
To make sure that the SO-DIMM is installed correctly, do as follows:
1. Turn the computer on.
2. While the “To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button” message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the ThinkVantage button. The Rescue and Recovery screen opens.
3. Click Access BIOS. The System Restart Required window is displayed.
4. Click Yes. The computer restarts, and the BIOS Setup Utility screen opens. The “Installed memory” item shows the total amount of memory installed Replacing memory in your computer. For example, if your computer has 1GB of memory and you install a 2GB SO-DIMM in it, the quantity shown in “Installed memory” should be 3GB.

HOW MUCH DDR2 MEMORY FOR LAPTOP

Referring to a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series of Notebook PC:

According to the Service Manual;

1) The Maximum Total Amount of Ram Memory depends on the Northbridge chipset used.
(System Controller. Intel)

If it is an Intel GM965 chipset, the maximum total amount is 4GigaByte. (4GB)
If it is an Intel GL960 chipset, the maximum total amount is 2GB.

Northbridge chipset (Or System Controller)

The Northbridge chipset was aptly named so, because of the general location of the chipset on the motherboard.
It is generally located under the Processor.

(The Southbridge chipset is located further 'South' on the motherboard)

The Northbridge chipset handles the faster capabilities of the computer.
It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-Speed graphics.

High-speed graphics being AGP or PCI-Express.
Integrated Graphics, or a graphics card installed into a PCI slot is NOT high-speed graphics.

This is handled by the Southbridge chipset.
The Southbridge chipset handles the slower capabilities of the computer.

Motherboard diagram;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

Information on the Northbridge (computing),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northbridge_%28computing%29

Information on the Intel GM965, and GL960 chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Core_2_Mobile_chipsets

Look under the heading Chipset at GL960.
Looking across you can see that the chipset supports;

1) DDR2 Sdram that is either 533MegaHertz, or 677MHz. (SO-DIMM ram memory for laptops)
2) Supports up to 3GB

[ Your laptop has TWO ram memory slots. The primary, or Main ram memory slot, (Outside edge), and the Optional ram memory slot, (Inside towards the middle)

There are No 1.5GB ram memory modules. ('Stick')
This is why 2GB is the maximum with the Intel GL960 chipset.

Install one 2GB ram memory module in the Main ram memory compartment,
OR,
Install one 1GB ram memory module, in the main ram memory compartment, and one 1GB ram memory module in the Optional ram memory compartment ]

Now look under the Chipset heading at GM965.
1) Supports DDR2 Sdram at either 533MHz, or 677MHz.
2) Supports up to 4GB.

How to know what Northbridge (System Controller) chipset your laptop uses?
Use CPU-Z from CPUID.com

Download page for the free Service Manual, for the Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series of Notebook PC's,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-toshiba

Scroll down with your eyes to the heading - Satellite Pro
Go across, and click on - L300

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on - L300 - it may take up to 30 seconds before you will see the first page come up.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.

What is the max ram speed my pc can take

According to some research, your desktop has 4 RAM slots available. The total maximum RAM your desktop can hold is 2GB (2048MB). Furthermore, each slot can hold a maximum of 1GB (1024) but cannot exceed the 2GB total.
This means you can theoretically install 2 x 1GB RAM DIMMS in 2 RAM slots or 4 x 512MB RAM DIMMS. Both will meet the desktops 2GB limitation.
The RAM specifications for your desktop are as follows:
RAM Limit: 2GB (2048MB) RAM Slot Type: SO-DIMM RAM Type: DDR1 (not DDR2 or DDR3) RAM Speed: PC3200/DDR400 ECC Type: Non-ECC
TIP: The RAM is DDR which means that while you can install them as singles (single-channel mode), the system will see a speed benefit from installing them as matched pairs (dual-channel mode).

Could I use MacBook Pro 1G RAM (hynix 1GB 2Rx16 PC3-8500S-7-A1) to upgrade my T400 2G RAM to 3G?

Hello thx5,
It depends on how the 2GB in your T400 is currently configured. If the 2GB in there now is just one 2GB stick of RAM then yes you can add the other 1GB stick and then you will have 3GB of RAM installed. If your 2GB is two 1GB sticks of RAM (which is more likely to be the case) then the 1GB stick you have from your Macbook Pro isn't going to help.

Note: your laptop can handle up to 8GB of RAM via two 4GB sticks.

Hope this helps, if so please leave some good feedback. Thanks.

IBM ThinkPad T40 2GB Max RAM

The T40 has two ram slots, you can put a 1g chip in each totaling 2g. If the chip will remove, then it is changeable. Vista needs a minimum of 256 to run, so, when you change BOTH chips to equal 2g it will probably read 1.744g, or it may read the full 2g. If it only reads 1g, then the second slot under keyboard may have malfunctioned. It could also be that the 256 chip is bad and your really only running 512 now. With all that said, in order to achieve 2g, you will need to put a 1g chip in each slot.

Intel D845GBV Motherboard Problem

PC1600 runs at 200MHZ and PC2100 runs at 266MHZ..

Since your motherboard only supports a max of 266MHZ, I would recommend that. (not to mention that PC1600 is pretty much obsolete)..

2nd, you motherboard supports a MAX of 2GB Total ram.. So, you could install 1GB + 256MB.. But why not go for 2xGB?

The price for a 1GB stick of PC2100 is around $75-125 CAN. Not soo cheap anymore...
