Trouble with my Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 hard drive

I was installing widows and I lost power while formatting the partition. Now when I boot the computer I get an error loading operating system message.

I did start from scratch and I keep getting the same message, "error loaing operating system", after I hit any key to boot from CD

  • andrew361 Apr 18, 2009

Windows starts to boot up when I unplug the hard drive. So I assume it is not the CD. Any help offered is appreciated.

You should reinstall the operating system. Anything less may not help you. if you would provide, which wrive the os was and which one you were formatting, would help to provide more helpful solution.

If you have another pc, i think you have as you are able to write here, please add this HDD to that one. See, if it is working ok or not. If is working ok, try delete and recreate the c:.

Start from scratch. Start the installation from the beginning

When you boot up, unplug your removable hard drive. Your computer is trying to boot off it and finding no OS it reports missing operating system or similar error.

Bios cannot read hard drive

Hi Robert,

IT could be that the Barracuda drive is formatted for boot up. I would boot up with the drive that boots, and make the Barracuda a spare drive, so you can go in and first see if has any issues as a drive,(meaning sector 0 errors, and if you can access it, then you can format it as a boot up drive, or get what data on that drive off for your friend.

Good Luck Mark

Test your HDD (Hard Disk Drive): go HERE, click Downloads and download Seagate Seatools for DOS (free). Burn the ISO to a CD, set your 1st boot device = CD drive and reboot with the disk in the drive. When the tester loads, choose the Quick Test in the upper left corner of the screen. It takes 5-10 minutes and will give you a pass or fail. If it tells your that SMART has tripped, or gives a fail notice, your drive is failing. You should have a warranty on that drive with Seagate.
If the drive passes as good, change your data cable. I have seen bad cables cause problems. Also check the power cable.
If you still have problems, enter Administrative Tools\Disk Management. Find your drive, Right click on it, and click "Mark Partition as Active".
If still no joy, try changing the SATA port on the mother board that your drive is plugged in to.
If still no joy, contact Seagate customer help, they are very good.

Verify what Drives have been detected by your Operating System by using Windows: Control Panel -> Admistrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management -> Your Hard disk(s) will be displayed with all existing partitions and any assigned drive letters.
Your external (or internal) drive must be recognized as having formatted partitions that have a drive letter assigned to each required partition.
Hope it helps: let me know how you go!

have you partitioned and formated it ? unless you do that to the drive it will not show up with a drive letter in windows. go into control panel, administrive tools, computer management, disk management - there you should see all your drives and you can partiton, format, assign or reassign drive letters to them. hope this solves your problem.
